  • Kawhia is home to two sacred trees. Legend has it the first waka carrying Tainui people from Hawaiiki was tied to one of them 800 years ago, and a Maori princess bedded down in a cave beneath the other. But local iwi disagree on which honour belongs to which tree. My husband noticed me working on this shot and said excitedly ‘That’s the pohutukawa the first waka came to”. Nice, now it’s a bit more than just another landscape shot to me :) 300+ views People/Portraiture HDR Photography Macro Photography Architecture Collaborations Skyscapes Animals/Birds/Insects Street Art Street Photogrpahy Everyday Objects Seascapes/Rivers/All Water Summer Photography Odd/Unusual Flowers/Plants/Trees Landscapes New Zealand Abstract Humour Black and White Photography

  • I do. And everything she symbolizes – the familiar sights and sounds, the period of our lives embedded in long term memory with our mothers, sisters, aunties and neighbors in it, the uniform sound of a sewing machine intertwined with casual chitchat. I still remember those gentle hands, gliding skillfully over soft materials, more than capable of turning a piece of fabric into lovable garments. Even my first girlfriend, the sweetest of souls, from a family of many, used to make clothes for herself, in patterns and colors she desired, as tight as I could wish, to perfectly fit the young man’s eye. Nowadays, the skill has migrated to distant lands, in search of a new pair of hands, not necessarily gentler, certainly cheaper. Time flies. We are left to do what people whose expiry date is fast approaching do – recycle the recollection of the good old days, the age when we were young and good looking. Now, we are only good looking. Such is life.

  • Watercolour of the 12th century, Haddon Hall, Derbyshire. / Taken from Rinkydink’s original photo. I used lots of lifting off and negative painting, to get the tonal contrasts. I wanted to emphasize the age and wonderful textures of the old stone work – almost a thousand years old. I’ve entered this in the Just Watercolours group challenge. / I really liked the original photo colouring. For this, I needed a limited palette of just four – sienna, umber, cerulean and yellow , which I used in various dilutions and mixtures.
