  • Friday August 3rd It happened again tonight. The old fool had left the door unlocked; and there, above the cages, some apparently empty and some housing pink-eyed rodents; stood the vessel containing the precious green liquid and marked with the words: “NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION” once more, at my disposal. Thanks to yesterday’s acquisition of a rather splendid pocketwatch, I have been able to establish that administration of about 2floz of the serum is sufficient to remain effective for approximately two hours. I have thus resolved that, weather permitting, tomorrow’s edification will begin with the short trip into town whereupon I will partake in what will no doubt be another fruitful bout of “shopping”, after which with any luck, there will be ample time for a spot of inexpensive dining followed by a close inspection of the ample figures belonging to those delightful ladies up there at Pedlar’s Lane bathhouse, whom I understand, usually prefer to keep themselves hidden away from prying eyes. Dash it… Awfully sorry ladies!

  • “The Visitor” is part 5 of the story of four friends who set out for a Christmas weekend in the country and land themselves in a frightening adventure..the first four chapters can be read by clicking on the links on the images seen below Watercolour on Arches Not Paper I froze, not daring to breathe, and slowly turned to see if one of us had gone out, but in the darkness of the room I could see the faint outline of three shapes…then if it wasn’t us, who was it? / At that moment Dahlia who was lying right next to me, chose to wake up and seeing the door open, was about to exclaim out loud…I clapped my hand over her mouth and the two of us stared mesmerized at the figure in the doorway…then suddenly and silently as it had appeared, it turned and vanished… we sat for what seemed like hours, afraid to move…finally as the skies began to lighten, I rose and went to the door…a hurried look outside showed that the storm had abated, and the sun was beginning to rise…no one was about and there were no footsteps leading to and from the bothy… / I turned back to find that the men were stirring and exclaiming over a stack of wood, some milk and bread, that were standing near the hearth….Dahlia and I exchanged a look and quickly cried in unison, “we must have overlooked them last night”…she and I were the only ones who knew about our night visitor and for once in accord, decided to keep silent…... / After we had something to eat, we would have to plan our next move…that is if we could move at all…we were marooned.... / Mark / The Bothy / The Grove / Lost / A Weekend in the Country

  • Well as you can see from the images below, The Empty Studio has been all about inks…my inks had been put away for so long some of them had dried out, and had to be discarded, but I still have an assortment of acrylic inks, and have been using mostly sepia and black for this collection… Today I added a bit of colour to this latest painting of Hollyhocks…they seemed to need it…I’ve had the sketch forever in my files, and I don’t know where it originated, but at one time I did grow these regal flowers in my garden and maybe the idea came from that time of my life Acrylic Inks on Cotton Paper… Silently a flower blooms, / In silence it falls away; / Yet here now, at this moment, at this place, / The world of the flower, the whole of / the world is blooming. / This is the talk of the flower, the truth / of the blossom: / The glory of eternal life is fully shining here. / - Zenkei Shibayama..

  • “Poppy” is the newest addition to the Empty Studio collection…the studio is getting a lot emptier as the day for installation draws nearer, so I decided to go back to long ago childhood crafts, and create this flower in a very old but unique way, painting it with lemon juice…I added a bit of detail with a bamboo pen…I am thrilled with the results, and plan to do a lot more of these..... see others in the series below Lemon Juice on Cartridge Paper At dawn I unite with the breeze / To announce the coming of light; / At eventide I join the birds / In bidding the light farewell. / The plains are decorated with / My beautiful colors, and the air / Is scented with my fragrance. / As I embrace Slumber the eyes of / Night watch over me, and as I / Awaken I stare at the sun, which is / The only eye of the day..from The Song of the Flower by Gibran.
