I saw this torn up photo of the Queen at an antique mart in Buenos Aires. I snapped a photo of it and restored it on PhotoShop. I still can’t get over how young she was here. I don’t think I’ve seen her this youthful and beautiful.

One of the first street shots I ever took back in 1964 in the East End of London. This was before Playstations, and probably the only ‘toy’ these kids shared between them was a skipping rope. Old bomb sites still held a fascination though as a form of amusement and exploration, as can be seen here. It was taken using a Yashica Mat 120 film twin lens reflex camera that took me six months to save up for. I used Tri-X B/W film and printed on a hard grade of paper to get the punchy contrast, a characteristic of all my early B/W work. My entry for the London Calling challenge. I found this difficult as I’ve never been to London to get a real ‘feel’ for the place, but here’s my two-cents worth: I have given a big nod towards graffiti/street art with the general style of the piece (line work, spray marks and drips) the London skyline gets a look in I couldn’t resist the CCTV camera robot (paranoid android?) with London having over 100 000 cameras throughout the city and finally I’ve included a large rain cloud in reference to the grey, overcast and generally miserable weather. I can’t decide on a colour – according to the challenge we should have one colour option for the shirt – so feel free to let me know what colour you think works best :) Detail: /

This well-known English village gets featured on everything from calendars to chocolate box lids! / This location also featured in the film Dr Doolittle which stared Rex Harrison. During this time a certain Ranulph Fiennes became offended by the construction of an ugly concrete dam built to create a harbour scene. Fiennes planned to demolish the dam. He used explosives which he later claimed to have obtained legitimately from the armoury. Using skills from a recently completed training course on evading search dogs by night, he escaped capture, but he and a guilty colleague were both subsequently traced. After a court case, Fiennes had to pay a hefty fine and he and his co-conspirator were discharged from the SAS. Fiennes was initially posted to another cavalry regiment but was then allowed to return to his regiment. I’m fortunate to live only a few miles away, so managed to capture this classic scene in the early morning before the tourist coaches arrived! Painted from a very old photo (1857) of a collier brig. Taken from my wonderful book of North East sailing ships on the coast. / And the ship, background and quay, are painted from the fenland port of Wisbech, on the Lincolnshire coast. The rest of the painting is from my imagination. Watercolour on two rivers, hand-made 140lb paper. / 14” x 21”

Another in the Masters series. / This is the centre part of a long panoramic watercolour. By Thomas Bush Hardy, 1895. I’ve moved some of the boats to be closer together, as my version is a small painting, 10×7 inches, on rough Bockingford tinted cream paper, 140lb. I will be painting the full length seascape in the future.

Taken on January 11, 2009 with an Olympus FE-340 It was the first day of the year that the weather in London was beautiful so I spent the day outdoor walking through the parks, and the squirrels are very friendly. This particular shot was in Green Park. While I was trying to set-up my camera to take a photo, this little guy suddenly climbed up my leg! (I missed the opportunity to take its picture while it was there) I looked down at it, and it looks to the side as though saying “I didn’t do anything…” (see image in first comment), then it runs behind me and tries to climb up my knapsack; then runs in front me, spirals up the pole and pokes its head to the side going “Peek-a-boo!” After it climbed down I brought my hand out. It grabbed my finger for a little while, but took off before I could get a picture then :-( ... But atleast I captured the funny Peek-a-boo moment! The light and dark areas in the eye may look like the iris and the sclera of the eye, but that is actually caused by reflections; The dark bit at the bottom left corner of the eye is a reflection of myself with the camera:

After I demonstrated a few wave painting techniques, I later thought to join them up into a painting! A Spontaneous watercolour! Watercolour 14” x 10” on Bockingford rough 140lb. So far, nobody has spotted the little men in white shirts, clinging for life, to the torn-off mast (left side of painting). I’ve entered this into Impressionism Cafe,‘seascapes’

While visiting Malmesbury, England, we stayed at the Old Bell. It’s a beautiful and one of the oldest inn’s in the world. This is an Impressionist digital painting of the wisteria growing on the inn. Featured in Digital Artists United group. / /

On May 3rd 1915 John McCrae wrote the poem In Flanders Fields, after witnessing the death of his friend, Lt. Alexis Helmer. Since then the Poppy has been the symbol for the lives lost during World War 1. On November 11th (UK) we commemorate the sacrifices made, and remember what they gave for us.
