“Brigadoon” generally is landscape art of the Arcadia Valley area in Ironton, Missouri, implying any possible similarities and, in some ways, its history, with that of the highlands of Scotland and the Hollywood fictional film and story by that name. This piece presents a blending of token landmarks - boulders of Elephant Rocks State Park in the foreground, Hole No. 1 with flag at AV County Club at left which, also, doubles partly, here, as the overspill at the dam of the local Shepherd Mountain Lake; directly behind the flag is “The Maples” red water tower, a storybook landmark behind which is Pilot Knob Mountain; at distant center is St. Paul’s Episcopal Church built 1870; at middle right is the antebellum courthouse, opened 1860, tucked against Shepherd Mountain; above and behind is a distant bald eagle - the national icon has returned recently to the Valley after becoming nearly extinct and, at very distant far right is Taum Sauk Reservoir, which is near Taum Sauk Lookout, the highest point in the state, at 1780 feet above sea level. The highway is Highway 21, which bisects the valley in two. All might combine to give a Scottish Highland or, “Brigadoon” feel (“I suppose everyone is searching for a ‘Brigadoon’”—the school teacher, in the Hollywood production). India ink on vellum, 17” x 8”.
A watercolor painting of an old stone bridge I photographed while I was in Scotland. I wanted to make it mystical.
This fellow would be a contender for the most photographed personality at the Highland Gathering (Bundanoon aka “Brigadoon”, in the Southern Highlands of NSW Australia) last weekend – he was the seller of these wonderfully unique hats, and was doing a roaring trade – no wonder his grin was so large!!! For one Saturday every April Bundanoon changes its name to Brigadoon. Kilted lads and lassies converge on the tiny town from all over Australia, and as the mists clear the swirl of bagpipes leads the hoards of visitors to the local oval for caber tossing, the lifting of the Stones of Manhood, dancing, mock sword fights, marching displays and stalls of every description. There is even a special steam train which conveys passengers from Sydney for the day. Well worth marking in your diary for next year! Beautiful!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJYyqzUr6jU search “Adam Lambert Come to Me” (I’m dedicating this one to Adam – this song – especially the last notes – will blow you away. I dare anyone to call him a “screamer” after listening to this!) “Come to Me, Bend to Me” Because they told me I can’t behold ye / till weddin’ music starts playin’; / To ease my longin’ there’s nothin’ wrong in / me standin’ out here an’ sayin’: Come to me, bend to me, kiss me good day! / Darlin’, my darlin’, ‘tis all I can say, / Jus’ come to me, bend to me, kiss me good day! / Gie me your lips an’ don’t take them away. Come, dearie, near me so ye can hear me, / I have to whisper this softly. / For though I’m burnin’ to shout my yearnin’, the words come tiptoein’ off me.
