This old tree stands on top a gnarly peak on the far east border of Glassier National Park where the long and great plans suddenly and somewhat unexpectedly jump up in a shear wall of stone. It was not alone but stood with the corpses of many other trees who for some reason or other had ceased being able to live in the hostile environment that had given them birth and carved their living flesh into such masterpieces of wood. This one, though, this one was different. It was bigger and more warped and had lived far longer then any of its brethren or children that lay scatted about, and something in the way the silver wood gleamed, something in the way that it reached so far, forever seeking shelter from the wind, left me standing in awe.
Thought these two might have been briefing each other on fishing tips….either that or discussing what’s on the menu for dinner. Image copyright © Marion Cullen. All rights reserved. Considered & Constructive critique invited and welcome.

This is as simple as it gets, yet for that, perhaps the most difficult. Knowing when to stop is the essence, but what a buzz I got from painting it. It is very wet Paynes grey Acrylic on a 40” x 30” single primed canvas. I hope you like it as much as I enjoyed making it. :-)
As the sun quickly descends to the horizon at Werribee River, it contributes to some last amazing colours only for a brief moment in time, as the trees aged roots on the cliffs long for a drop of water. In that brief moment as he gently caressed her skin she felt he was their, but it was all so unsure that she couldnt move, afraid if she turned he would be gone. She had been waiting for 18 months for his return from the war, with no messages, no letters, she thought him dead. She chose to remain still and except his love and warmth even in that…Brief Moment In Time.

Short-lived but glorious, the daylily makes a bright, brief statement and then fades forever.
What could these Pelican’s possibly be chatting about? What worries do THEY have? / Left Pelican: “So, how is the fishing today?” / Pelican on right replies: “Oh, it’s been pretty good. When are you going to properly secure your pole with a rope? Have you not read the First Landing State Park pole owners association booklet?” Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel visible in the background.

I know I’m showing my age with my reference to the TV show, Queen for a Day, but I thought of that when I saw this daylily. In all its resplendence, it “reigns” for only a day but how glorious it is during that brief period of time. I’d like to dedicate this image to my long-time friend, Claudette, fondly known as Ste. Claud, who will be Queen for a Day on June 3 when she celebrates her birthday. Happy Birthday, Ste. Claud!

“This can’t last. This misery can’t last. I must remember that and try to control myself. Nothing lasts really. Neither happiness nor despair. Not even life lasts very long. They’ll come a time in the future when I shan’t mind about this anymore. But I can look back and say quite peacefully and cheerfully how silly I was. No, no I don’t want that time to come hither. I want to remember every minute, always, always to the end of my days. ” – Brief Encounter / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /
This little chickadee stayed on that branch just long enough to catch him before he took off. The way they flit about makes them a challenge to photograph.

Caught up in life, I’ve been on a bit of a photographic dry spell of late. A few days ago at lunch, I took my camera out to my patch of wildflowers to see what was surviving the hot, dry summer here. These past their prime flowers speak much of life and our time in this space. More than I could hope to verbalize.
