  • Sorry for not posting many shots over the past few weeks and not leaving any replies. I have been really busy with work and work around the house. I can tell you the past few days have been the worst choice to do some work around the Garden. Anyway here are two HDR – Sunrise shots from a few weeks ago taken from Victoria Road near the old White Bay Power Station. I hope you like it. Please also visit my website alexkess.com and my photoblog . Cheers and Thanks, Alex

  • Sydney has many attractions but, I’m sure, the two most well known are the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Quite a few years back now, I got up very early one morning, braved the cold, setup the camera and took this image. I really like the glow from the light just before the sun came up. Scan from Fujichrome. Have sold as a laminated print to someone on RB. Thank you whoever purchased !

  • Last Sunday I wend down to Sculpture By The Sea at Bondi Beach. The sky was amazing. It rained all the way down in the car (at 5am) then stopped as I parked. The clouds threatened rain for the 90 min I was taking photos, but then just as I was getting ready to go, a window opened up in the clouds and beautiful golden light streamed over the sculptures. The dark threatening clouds made the perfect backdrop. This image is a 3 shot HDR image. I printed this image up and it looks great in my hall… It has become one of my favorites.

  • BEST VIEWED LARGER / This shot was taken at Dawn from the building I work in it shows in the North Sydney CBD. The Sydney Harbour Bridge links the North Sydney CBD with the Sydney CBD. The shot was taken using a Nikon D300, Nikon 18 – 200mm lens , for any Nikononians the 18-200mm lens is wonderful it comes in handy as a all purose lens. The shot was created from 3 exposures and processed with Photomatix HDR software. So continues my exploration of HDR.. its fun

  • Top Featured Piece Of The Day in the Live, Love, Dream group, 12th Nov, 2008. / Featured in the Rivers, Lakes and Dams group, 12th Nov, 2008. Early one January morning, I got out of bed before dawn and headed in to London and the Thames. I knew where I wanted to get the shot from. I set up the tripod and camera and waited. I hoped the sun would be visible, but had nothing more to base the possibility on other than the sky had been red at sunset the night before. My luck was in!

  • BEST VIEWED LARGER This shot taken with my trusty Nikon D300, with my everloving great value Sigma 10-20mm lens.4 bracketted exposures. No enhancement of colours or filters and very little manipulation required. Software used Photomatix and Capture NX Taken from McMahons Point around 6am. The light , clouds and colour made my camera release finger twitch. Everytime I photograph the Sydney Harbour Bridge its different she has many moods / FRAMED PRINT / / See Also Sydney The Photographers Cut – Moods Of A City – THe HDR Series

  • Sunset at U Bein’s Bridge – Mandalay, Burma. The bridge, made entirely of teak, is said to be the longest wooden bridge in the world. A fascinating human procession can be seen on the bridge at any time of day, but especially at sunset. A large Buddhist monastery is located at the foot of the bridge explaining the large number of monks that use it.

  • Reflections Before Sunrise Submitted for the Letter R in Alphabet Soup NEW Challenge for The Best of R Challenge The Forth Railway Bridge Queensferry Edinburgh Scotland: The 2.5 km. (1.5 mile) Forth Railway Bridge, the world’s first major steel bridge, with its gigantic girder spans of 521 m. (1710 ft.) ranks as one of the great feats of civilization. It was begun in 1883 and formally completed on 4 March 1890 when HRH Edward Prince of Wales tapped into place a ‘golden’ rivet. I love this old bridge because it brings back many wonderful memories of my childhood as we travelled across it on old trains to Burnt Island and Kinghorn for day trips. Nostalgic, I know, but I have a fascination with things that influenced my life. I was always struck by it’s sheer size and complex construction. I even tried to build it once from matchsticks and glue. I captured this picture on a cold and frosty morning in Nov 2008 when visiting my sick father in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. I’ll always remember the look on his face as I showed him this picture on my Nikon screen. He said, through his oxygen mask “WOW son, that’s brilliant!” Thanks dad! • For this one I waded out under the Sandgate bridge at dawn & took a 10 sec exposure @ f16. / Then I kept the camera in position & waited, waited, waited until the bird flew past and took a shot at 1/180. / Then I combined the two photos in a little program you might know called photoshop. / I can see this one working well on a large canvas.

  • MUCH BETTER VIEWED LARGER / 190 Comments,125 Favourites, 2956 Views / Sydney is great for sunrises, it quite often receives spectacular sunrises as it greets the sunrises that appear from the east. This shot shows the city skyline as seen from North Sydney CBD on the northern shore of Sydney Harbour, in the foreground is Lavender Bay. Technique: HDR , 5 Bracketted images processed with Photomatix Pro with avery slight adjustment (sharpening & contrast) in Capture NX. Equipment: Nikon D300 , Nikon 18-200mm lens No filters or colour adjustment 1) RED SKY AT NIGHT… means that as the sun sets in the west, if it has a red hue or color to it, then the moisture was further west of their location. Thus SAILORS DELIGHT. A beautiful sunset. 2) RED SKY IN MORN…means that as the sunlight from the rising sun passes through moisture, it too will be red. This means that with the rotation of the earth, this will bring this moisture (and possible storm) right on top of them and it is only a few hours away. SO SAILORS TAKE WARN.” / I hope this bit of weather science helps.

  • Took this some time ago, while testing a new Sigma f/2.8 lens. I am adding this into a Norfolk Landscape Art Exhibit, it looks FANTASTC on metallic print paper (11×14, matted and framed). / I now use White House Custom Color (WHCC) for my printing needs, they really do a great job. Just wanted to get some feedback here, if folks like this shot as much as I do.
