I picked this up beneath one of these incredible pines in The Botanic Garden at Dawyck. I think the rich mahogany coloured markings are beautiful. My next upload will show the tree. ’’GENERAL BOTANICAL CHARACTERISTICS : / Brewer spruce is a native, endemic conifer. It has a distinctive, / drooping appearance caused by the presence of thousands of long, / ropelike branches hanging from all but the topmost horizontal limbs. At maturity Brewer spruces usually reaches 80 to 100 / feet (24-30 m) in height, but can reach up to 172 feet (52 m) in / height. Diameters range from approximately 3.8 feet (117 cm) / to up to 4.5 feet (1.35 m) in some areas. The bark is thin and / broken into long, thin, appressed scales. The leaves are obtuse, flat on top, and rounded underneath, and spread / from all sides of the branchlets. The male cones are stalked and oblong / (3 to 4 inches [7-10 cm] long). Brewer’s Quay Another shot of Weymouth harbour, Dorset, England. / This one taken looking across towards Brewer’s Quay. / I liked the pile of ‘rope spaghetti’ and other boat jumble in the foreground. Date: 10th May 2008 Click here to see Weymouth’s Sandsfoot Castle
I met this man at Eumundi Markets in Eumundi, Sunshine Coast of Queensland. He was selling Ginger Beer and I asked if I could photograph him – which he was quite happy for me to do. I showed him the result on the back of my camera and he seemed pleased. I have been doing a series of photographs of shop owners, usually in the context of what they are selling. I took a photo of him in his stall but there was a harsh shadow over his face, so I am glad I asked for this close up. I’m working on some portraits to print for a local camera club, plus finalising selections for an upcoming group exhibition in Wollongong. I really like the expression in this portrait and even more so in black and white. I did a lot of work on this photo and the more I stared at him the more I wish I had asked him to remove his glasses. PENTAX K10D f/2.8, 0.017 sec (1/60), ISO 100, 50 mm

Brewer’s blackbird
Just a fun composition out of some old and some new pics. Description for DAC: Layer 1 in Photoshop CS3 is the blackbird on the rocks with lighting coming from the West. I duplicated this layer and used Multiply as the blending mode. I added my big Moon between the two layers and erased over the background copy on just the Moon so it could be seen brighter. I then added the cloudy sky to the otherwise clear sky of the original bird layer. The cloudy sky has a tree branch in it also. I placed this layer between the multiplied background layers, and reduced the opacity to about 65%. I then added a new layer and colored the yellow eye of the bird using a soft paintbrush at about 50% opacity. I flattened the image, and you are seeing the results. This took about 35 minutes for me to create in case anyone is interested in the time investment of some of my creations that use multi-layering in PS. ;-)

Another bird species photographed in the Plumas Nat’l Forest in the Sierra Nevada Mts of Northern Calif while on vacation this summer. Brewer’s Sparrow is a winter visitor to where we live in SE AZ, so to see them on their breeding grounds, in nuptial attire, and in full song, is a a big change from their drab, quite selves that we experience in the winter.
