Clyde’s first solo photoshoot ….4 weeks old as of 20 April 2009. / The largest male in a litter of nine: the parents being Bela and Troy (also featured in my portfolio). He was born on the anniversary of our Rottweiler’s passing (Clyde): we had planned to keep a boy from this litter and felt it appropriate to name him after ‘my boy’. / He is the largest of the litter, the most vocal and the biggest wimp. However, by the end of the 19th century as railroads became the main method for moving stock to market, the breed had declined so much that in 1900 there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil.

The lion (Panthera leo) is a member of the family Felidae and one of four big cats in the genus Panthera. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India, having disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East, and Western Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene (about 10,000 years ago), the lion was the most widespread large land mammal beside humans. They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from western Europe to India and, in the Americas, from the Yukon to Peru. Should they survive the rigors of cubhood, lionesses in secure habitat, such as national parks, frequently reach an age of 12–14 years whereas male lions seldom live for longer than 8 years. However, there are records of lionesses living for up to 20 years in the wild. In captivity both male and female lions can live for over 20 years. They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator, although they will resort to scavenging if the opportunity arises. While lions, in general, do not selectively hunt humans, some have been known to become man-eaters and seek human prey. The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of 30 to 50 percent over the past two decades in its African range; populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not well understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Lions have been kept in menageries since Roman times and have been a key species sought after and exhibited in zoos the world over since the late eighteenth century. Zoos are cooperating worldwide in breeding programs for the endangered Asiatic subspecies. The male lion is highly distinctive and is easily recognized by its mane. The lion, particularly the face of the male, is one of the most widely recognized animal symbols in human culture.

His name is a bit inappropriate really : his first owners took him from the street where he had been abandoned and whist with them chased a cat (sadly encouraged to do so) and ended up under a car. He went into the forest into hiding and led to a ‘search party’ to find him. Sadly his owner had to return to the UK and despite trying to rehome him were unable to do so. Fortunately (for Lucky) we were moving (with our four cats) to a detatched home and we adopted him. / He has scars on his body and legs, broken teeth and a perpetual ‘life does me no favours’ type of look. He chases cats, runs from pups, tolerates life and barks and snaps at anything that buzzes (he has constant bites and stings as a result). / He is a man of routine, has no social decorum and produces abundant amountsof pet nectar. He constantly needs a bath and hates water: even refuses to toilet or go for a walk if there is a hint of rain. / Given choice he would stay in ‘bed’ 24/7 – probably read a cheap tabloid newspaper – headlines, page 3 and sport. / In addition to the above he is a Heinx 47. Obviously boxer, a hint of mastiff and a suggestion of Rhodesian Ridgeback. LUCKY /

The smallest of the three boys – short haired with very big feet! The Rottweiler, or Rottweil Metzgerhund (“Butchers Dog”), is a “medium to large size, stalwart dog” breed originating in Germany as a herding dog. It is a hardy and very intelligent breed. Rottweilers also worked as draught dogs, pulling carts to carry meat and other products to market. “Rottweiler breeders aim at a dog of abundant strength, black coated with clearly defined rich tan markings, whose powerful appearance does not lack nobility and which is exceptionally well suited to being a companion, service and working dog.” The Rottweiler was kept busy in these traditional roles until the mid-19th century when railroads replaced droving for getting livestock to market. Although there are still Rottweilers working stock all over the world, many other roles have been found for this versatile breed. During the first and second World Wars, Rottweilers were put into service in various roles including as messenger, draught and guard dogs. Currently they are often used as search and rescue, assistance, guide dogs for the blind, guard and police dogs in addition to their traditional roles. Although an extremely versatile breed used in recent times for many other purposes, the Rottweiler is first and foremost one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of herding breeds. A multi-faceted herding and stock protection dog of exceptional ability, it is capable of working all kinds of livestock under a wide variety of conditions. The breed is an ancient one, whose history stretches back to the Roman Empire. In those times, the legions traveled with their meat on the hoof and required the assistance of working dogs to herd the cattle. One route the army traveled was through Württemberg and on to the small market town of Rottweil. The principal ancestors of the first Rottweilers during this time was supposed to be the Roman droving dog, local dogs the army met on its travels, and dogs with molosser appearance coming from England and The Netherlands. This region eventually became an important cattle area, and the descendants of the Roman cattle dogs proved their worth in both driving and protecting the cattle from robbers and wild animals. However, by the end of the 19th century as railroads became the main method for moving stock to market, the breed had declined so much that in 1900 there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil. My Pet Portraits have seen me through some rough times…I have a deep affection for these drawings…it was if all else had failed around me and the only thing that would generate some joy and monitary reward were these little drawings of people’s pets…Jammers was actually one of my dogs (long since passed away) and her portrait was one of the examples I had on my flyers that I would leave around at stores and businesses… / I got more work from people that just fell in love with the look in her eyes…many people did not know what kind of dog it was… they just wanted a drawing just like Jammers. This drawing is drawn with Prismacolor Pencil and just a touch of Pastel. Finally got to the bottom of my art storage…a summer long quest. / I have all of my unframed work lying flat and layered in a moisture free container…these containers are chucked full of art work…as I complete I place in storage…forgot all about Tiny Tot! / “Tiny Tot” is one of my first Pet Portraits, drawn in Jamaica nearly 17 years ago…. We were staying in Jamaica so Russ could bring his high voltage experience and help the island’s Power Company…we were there almost a month and thank God I had the presents of mind to pack my pastels and color pencils… / Went to a little art and craft store in Kingston and found the most dreadful paper…it was so rough that it chewed up my pastels in a flash and from that time on I have drawn on a smooth bonded, acid free, card stock artist drawing paper. / This piece is 11” X 14” unframed.

This is my Baby Boudy, he is a Bullmastiff and the most sweetest dog in the world..the only down fall with Boudy is he drools this awful slime, and when he shakes his head ..this slime flies everywhere…everyone has fallen victim to it, it has landed on their heads, their arms..I have to wash my walls and window sills every other day from where he lays his Jowls on them to look outside, but then he gives me “this look” and I can’t help but say AAWWW You’re so cute!! With the snowbirds arriving in the desert comes the Pet Portraits…I always get a long waiting list starting just after the first of October. / I soooo enjoy doing Pet Portraits…they have been my life line over the years, paid lots of bills and kept me going another day. Many of my watchers b-mail me about “Lil’ Bit” (AKA Skinny) ...we call him Skinny around the plantation… however many of you know him as Lil’Bit …the little white Chihuahua that addopted us last winter. / He survived the wilds of the Nevada /Arizona desert for what we feel to be about 3 months. Eating chipmunks, bugs and maybe an occasional slow rabit…LOL, Lord only knows what he did for water let alone food! / Long story short…after finding him near death on our front porch, we brought him into our family and growing pack of dogs…he had HUGE fear and aggression issues and was a downright dangerous little dog. / But I never gave up on him and he never gave up on me…In the beginning I was told by three Vet’s and canine authorities to put him to sleep… why take on a dangerous dog when there are so many good ones out there that need homes? / Well BECAUSE!!! ...I am just not a quitter and I just knew there was something special about this little dog. / I finally caught him in an ungarded moment…we see more and more of these now…he relaxes and just tends to the business of being a dog. / Still no smiles, but I promise… the FIRST one I can capture, you all will be the first to see! / Thanks for viewing…
