  • In my early twenties, I traveled to Africa to see the fascinating wildlife in their own habitat. I have just begun to scan some of my photos that have lied dormant in a photo album. With the advance of digital photography, I can crop, sharpen and enhance these photographs to remember the glorious sunsets and exquisite and fascinating wildlife in Kenya and other areas of Africa. This was a memorable trip with some great photos to share not that I can use technology to improve on many images of African life. / I can’t help but admire the fashionable blonde hair style that adorns this beautiful Crane’s head. The respect that the people of Uganda have for this friendly, gentle and peace loving bird, characteristics that also reflect the Ugandan people are a model for all of us who want to preserve one of our most precious resouces, our planet’s wildlife. It is a crime punishable by imprisonment to kill a Crested Crane. I have often hoped that people who are cruel or recklessly kill our wildlife should be held accountable for their crimes, especially for those animals that are close to extinction due to man’s greed, ignorance and massive denial about the serious threat to our ecosystem and our specie’s survival. The crested crane roosts in trees, because of a long hind toe that can grasp branches. These magnificent birds have a lovely breeding display involving dancing, bowing, and jumping. It has a booming call which involves inflaition of the red gular sac. This is a whimsical photo of this unusual looking species, a delight to view overcoming aged technology and enhancing my passion for wildlife as revealed by this magnificent subject. I love her fashion forward hair style.

  • I’ve been experimenting with overlays and did this one of a male and female bluebird, a pair which I seldom have an opportunity to photograph together. I put the two separate images together and in the words of my good British friend, Jesika, I “fiddled with the twiddly bits” and came up with this version. It reminded me of the line from the “Night Before Christmas” when “visions of sugarplums danced in my head”; hence, the title.

  • A few weeks ago I posted a pic of my boy bunny Taz! I’ve been asked what his girlfriend Savanna looks like, so here she is, in all her furry glory. A true Lionhead, her origins are a bit of a mystery as we adopted her from a rescue centre. Before we could adopt, we had to take Taz to the centre to meet up with her and make sure that they got on OK – call it a “hot date”! :o) Savanna initially chased and attacked Taz but his gentle nature quickly won her over and they soon became the best of friends. Savanna’s hobbies include thumping, chewing the walls/carpets/my fingers and eating the mail when it drops through the front door! Taz

She saw an opportunity for good free grub and took it …..what clever cat wouldn’t. / We affectionately called her Dibley as shemade the first ‘connection’ with us whilst we were watching ‘The Vicar of Dibley’: the dog collar suited the name and it stuck. / By the time we moved to a more rural setting the fat was part of the clan. More fool us the ‘fat’ cat we adopted, was infact pregnant and gave birth within days of moving to our new home. The tabby cat has a distinctive coat that features stripes, dots, or swirling patterns. Tabbies are sometimes erroneously assumed to be a breed of cat. In fact, the tabby pattern is a naturally occurring feature that may be the original coloration of the domestic cat’s distant ancestors. Tabby color is found in many breeds of cat, as well as among the general ‘moggy’ (mixed-breed or mongrel) population. When cats are allowed to breed randomly, the coloration of the population tends toward brown mackerel tabbies with green eyes[, leading geneticists to believe that this is the common wild phenotype of the domestic cat. The tabby usually has an “M” mark on its forehead. The word, adapted from the name of a kind of textile, comes from French tabis, which was earlier atabis, and in medieval Latin attabi. The distant origin of the word seems to be from the Attabiyah section of Baghdad where a type of striped silk was made that was later used to describe cats. Since the tabby pattern is a common wild type, it would be assumed that medieval cats were of tabby type. This was not the case in England at least. Some time after the mid-17th century, the curious antiquary John Aubrey noted in his disorganized memoranda, “W. Laud, A.B. Cant. was a great lover of Catts. He was presented with some Cyprus-catts, i.e. our Tabby-catts, which were sold, at first for 5 pounds a piece: this was about 1637 or 1638. I doe well remember that the common English Catt, was white with some blewish piednesse : sc, a gallipot3 blew. The race or breed of them are now almost lost.” William Salmon, in The Compleat English Physician, (London, 1693:326) notes of the domestic cat, “It is a neat and cleanly creature, often licking itself to keep it fair and clean, and washing its face with its fore feet; the best are such as of a fair and large kind and of an exquisite tabby color called Cyprus cats”. A study by the National Cancer Institute suggests that all current house cats (Felis catus) in the world are descendants from a group of self-domesticating wild cats 10,000 years ago, somewhere in the Near East. The closest relative of the Wild cat is the Sand Cat (Felis margarita). DIBLEY /

  • “I am such a wimp and don’t like the vet stabbing me and so much has happened to me in the past 6 weeks! Then I was alone, abandoned, full of worms, ticks and fleas, pregnant, cold and hungry. I was found by my new Mum and now I am vacinated, speyed and today I had my last trumatic visit to the vet and had a blood test so that I can go and live in England if my Mum has to return there. Their mother is Bela and he father is Troy. / Taken with Sony Cybershot 2 May 2009 The Rottweiler, or Rottweil Metzgerhund (“Butchers Dog”), is a “medium to large size, stalwart dog” breed originating in Germany as a herding dog. It is a hardy and very intelligent breed. Rottweilers also worked as draught dogs, pulling carts to carry meat and other products to market. “Rottweiler breeders aim at a dog of abundant strength, black coated with clearly defined rich tan markings, whose powerful appearance does not lack nobility and which is exceptionally well suited to being a companion, service and working dog.” The Rottweiler was kept busy in these traditional roles until the mid-19th century when railroads replaced droving for getting livestock to market. Although there are still Rottweilers working stock all over the world, many other roles have been found for this versatile breed. During the first and second World Wars, Rottweilers were put into service in various roles including as messenger, draught and guard dogs. Currently they are often used as search and rescue, assistance, guide dogs for the blind, guard and police dogs in addition to their traditional roles. Although an extremely versatile breed used in recent times for many other purposes, the Rottweiler is first and foremost one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of herding breeds. A multi-faceted herding and stock protection dog of exceptional ability, it is capable of working all kinds of livestock under a wide variety of conditions. The breed is an ancient one, whose history stretches back to the Roman Empire. In those times, the legions traveled with their meat on the hoof and required the assistance of working dogs to herd the cattle. One route the army traveled was through Württemberg and on to the small market town of Rottweil. The principal ancestors of the first Rottweilers during this time was supposed to be the Roman droving dog, local dogs the army met on its travels, and dogs with molosser appearance coming from England and The Netherlands. This region eventually became an important cattle area, and the descendants of the Roman cattle dogs proved their worth in both driving and protecting the cattle from robbers and wild animals. However, by the end of the 19th century as railroads became the main method for moving stock to market, the breed had declined so much that in 1900 there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil. • You might have the burning questioin as to what does a dog do on it’s day off?...well when your are a rescued little guy you find your favorite spot and fuzzy blanket and drift into an uninterupted nap. / Taking these stray, abanded, abused animals in has it’s moments when you realize to the fullest extent just how much you change an animal’s life as they get further and further from the fear and just learn to be a happy and content dog again. / Lil’ Bit still has some mildly assertive survival issues… but they are quickly fading as he adjusts and gains confidence that he has food to eat and a place to sleep. / He is quickly turning into a delightful, comical little taco-dog!!!

  • My Doggie T-shirt designs were created by artist Barbara Anne Applegate back in the early 80’s I was house bound with an ailing husband that needed constant , constant supervision although he slept most of the time. So with lots of time on my hands I began drawing using colored Sharpie pens and when I needed white, I would use a liquid white ink pen. So they are kind of pen and ink creations, I’m not really sure what to call them. / My designs were first used to create jewelry, then in the late 90’s I used them again to create doggie animation. Now in 2009 I am re-scanning the original art work and making Graphic art designs for T-shirts. / Transparancy and any text created in Photoshop. / 513 Views Featured on the Red Bubble home page. / September 29th 2009 / Featured in / First Things 12/10/09

  • Yes…Lil’Bit (aka-Skinny) got well enough to go and finally see the Dr. about the neuter surgery! MAJOR advancement in our quest to help Lil’Bit become a happy little Taco Dog. For those of you just now reading about this little guy…we rescued him from the wilds of the Nevada desert…Found him on our front porch in a little ball, starved and near death. I woke up a few days ago and saw that he had gone in and laid down in the pet travel crate on his OWN!!! / I silently said my prayers and thank-you’s to any unseen force that may have finally given me a break…and I walked over quietly and closed the door. Well this wasn’t what he was expecting so we had some whining and fuss… but I was too busy calling the Vet hoping beyond hope they could see me and what a golden opportunity this was. / With luck they were able to work us in…it was quite the excersize for the Vet and her techs to now get Lil Bit out of the crate without the signiture biting response… I just told them I was going to leave…I didn’t want to hear or know how they decided they were going to handle him…to be careful and Good Luck! / Today I picked him up and all went off with out a hitch…needless to say, he is not the Favorite of the Vet’s office but they all seemed like they too felt they had passed a test being able to handle this over aggressive little 3 pound dog with GREAT BIG TEETH!!! / So we are home now…just awaiting recovery on his part and the hormone levels to slowly reduce so we can start a new chapter. / Wish us luck…I took this capture when he finally woke up in one of his favorite spots and told him the news…Thanks for taking the time to have a read and maybe a chuckle…

  • A painting of a giant panda by Morgan Fitzsimons / watercolor on fabriano 8×11 Giant pandas live in a few mountain ranges in central China, in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. They once lived in lowland areas, but farming, forest clearing, and other development now restrict giant pandas to the mountains. The giant panda is listed as endangered in the World Conservation Union’s (IUCN’s) Red List of Threatened Animals. There are about 1,600 left in the wild. More than 160 pandas live in zoos and breeding centers around the world, mostly in China.
