Taken while hiking.
Taken while hiking… this is actually small lake in a valley.
Boreas Pass, Colorado…..one of my favorite places on the face of the Earth to shoot at….the fact that there is hardly anyone ever up here and the fields of Wildflowers go on forever really make this quite an extraordinary place. Located on the Continental Divide, it reaches an altitude of 11,481 feet high. The pass was formerly known as Breckenridge Pass in the 1860s, when it served as an early route for thousands of prospectors during the Colorado Gold Rush who crossed from South Park to look for gold in the valley of the Blue around Breckenridge. In 1866, it was widened to a wagon road that accommodated stagecoaches. In 1882, under the direction of Sidney Dillon of the Union Pacific Railroad , the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad (by then controlled by the Union Pacific) begun laying narrow gauge tracks up the pass, which Dillon renamed in honor of Boreas, the Ancient Greek god of the North Wind.
Captured above Breckenridge, Colorado….I just had to stop the car along Boreas Pass to get this shot. Sometimes, albeit rare times, mid day light can work, and this is one of those very rare times where it does. Thoughts most welcomed!
Breckenridge, Colorado on Thanksgiving day 2007
/ Springtime in the Rockies
Although Breckenridge, Colorado is now a scenic ski resort area, it was once a gold mining town. The remains of this crumbling old wooden dredge boat floats on a pond it more than likely created. Note the hills of gravel behind the boat which were dredged up by one of nine dredge boats brought to this area around 1898. These mechnical miners dredged up glacial rock and separated it from the finer gravels from which they washed the gold. The Dredge boats floated on ponds they created while dredging the river beds to depths of 50 feet in a swath some 200 feet wide in search of gold. The last boat ceased operations in 1942. You will see these piles of gravel all along the route from Frisco right into the city limits of Breckenridge. At one point one of the dredge boats actually broke though right into the town of Breckenridge. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please don’t copy or download this image. This image was featured in the group, American Southwest on March 19, 2009. and again on March 23, 2009 by the Stream Crossings group. It was a cold January day in the Rockies. While snowshoeing in Colorado on the trail from Frisco to Breckenridge, we came across this frozen stream early in our trek. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please do not copy or download this image.
