The average size of the fish Grandpaw and Grandson caught was pretty small, but in Grandson’s eyes they were all whoppers! Beauty’s in the eye of the beholder, and every tiny fish was the catch of the day to a little four year old!
Mark Twain, great American humorist, usually had something witty to say on just about any subject. I coupled this quote on fishing for love with a macro of a nice little bream (perch) my husband caught in a little pond in Oklahoma.

For such a common fish the Snapper seems to have a lot of names. In NSW its also known as Red Bream, Cockney, Squire, The Light Horseman and Pinkie. Personally I prefer Wallumai, after all that’s what the local Sydney-siders called it for tens of thousands of years. Much more dignified than “Pinkie”.

About This Painting / The location for this painting is in Whangarei Harbour on the inner side of Bream Bay, Northland, New Zealand (Aotearoa). You can see this view from a lookout on State Highway 10 just south of Whangarei city. It is a wonderful vista, from the mangroves on the nearer shoreline to Parua on the opposite coast and Whangarei Heads in the distance. A little closer to the city (on the left of this painting) an industrial area is beginning to encroach on the shoreline flats. It was an awareness of this “march of civilisation” across the face of mother nature that prompted me to paint this silent, watching figure looking out, probably in the warm morning light of a summer’s day, across the harbour she loves. Acrylic on canvas. Exhibited at 1999 Newman Northland Art Awards Exhibition - / Whangarei. Sold to a collector in Whangarei NZ. About This Graphic / This features my acrylic painting of Bream Bay, the outer harbour of Whangarei, NZ, and some Christmas graphics in Fireworks to go with it. The islands in the painting are the Hen and Chickens Group. The flowers on the left are our “Christmas Tree” the Pohutukawa (Meterosideros excelsa). that flowers all round the Northland and Auckland coastlines at Christmas time – absolutely stunning. The painting was done as a commission and was 6’ x 25”. I took a number of photos of it before it left me – using my old Olympus OM1 – and was sorely disappointed with all of them when I got them developed. All the detail was gone from the rocks, and all the varied blues in the water were lost. I find photographing blues very hard, and next time with a painting this size I will definitely shoot it in sections. I’m glad now I have a digital so can see the image right away. Merry Christmas Everyone!
