Olympus E510 / The Megachilidae are a cosmopolitan family of (mostly) solitary bees whose pollen-carrying structure (called a scopa) is restricted to the ventral surface of the abdomen (rather than mostly or exclusively on the hind legs as in other bee families). Megachilid genera are most commonly known as mason bees and leafcutter bees, reflecting the materials they build their nest cells from (soil or leaves, respectively); a few collect plant or animal hairs and fibers, and are called carder bees. All species feed on nectar and pollen, but a few are cleptoparasites (informally called “cuckoo bees”), feeding on pollen collected by other megachilid bees. Parasitic species do not possess a scopa. The brightly colored scopa leads to a colloquial name used occasionally in North America – “Jelly-belly bees.” Megachilid bees are among the world’s most efficient pollinators because of their energetic swimming-like motion in the reproductive structures of flowers, which moves pollen, as needed for pollination. Ironically, one of the reasons they are efficient pollinators is their frequency of visits to plants, but this is because they are extremely inefficient at gathering pollen; compared to all other bee families, megachilids require on average nearly ten times as many trips to flowers to gather sufficient resources to provision a single brood cell. / North America has many native megachilid species, but Alfalfa leafcutter bees (Megachile rotundata) are an imported species used for pollination. The most significant native species is Osmia lignaria (the “Orchard Mason Bee” or “Blue Orchard Bee”), which is sold commercially for use in orchard crop pollination, and which can be attracted to nest in wooden blocks with holes drilled in them (which are also sold commercially for this purpose). Aaaaargh… now I can’t get that annoying theme music out of my head!!! I’ve just got to go and eat some mushrooms… (hmmm, green or red?) jL
Okay well this morning I felt the urge to get out and finally take some new pics and the first thing that caught my eye was a bunch of dandelions that were starting to break apart.. However I didn’t feel like just taking a plain shot of a dandelion, I felt like doing something a tad more artistic, so today I have a series of three dandelion shots that I have processed in an artistic way to break free of the standard flower macro bounds.. I am open to all feedback because I will only keep shots uploaded that people think are worth being on the sight.. Thanks for having a look! This would have to be the least artistic shot of this morning, as the only real major treatment here was implementing a monochromatic filter and then a sepia filter over the top of that.. As per usual the exposure, contrast and levels were played with to bring the image to what I believed worked best.. / I liked this image as it seemed to “pop” and it looks almost as though the dandelion is lurching forward in an attempt to break free from its flowers. I think that this shot and Season’s End both really captured the moment that the dandelion begins to lose its flowers and disappear from existence.
Taken at Mammoth Hot Springs (Yellowstone Nat’l Park, WY) on a cold September morning. The sun was beginning to break through the fog, but the boardwalk still led through an eerie scene. Probably my favorite as I like the mystery. Canon Elan II / Velvia film.

“Wind break” is about reducing the landscape down to its barest essentials, so that the focus is on the hills, the trees and their shadows. / The trees are overlapped to give the impression that there are more trees than there actually are. The reason I made them seem to float above the ground is because these types of trees are not indigenous to the surrounding landscape. They don’t really belong. / The hills themselves are smooth and bereft of incidental details, reminiscent of the drought affected grasslands commonly found in pastoral farmlands. I used the common colour pencils to depict having the courage to be different and break out. I used a very short depth of field on this shot to focus on the red pencil and bring a 3-D effect to the shot. I hold this shot very close to heart- the only shot I submitted to a competition and sailed through to the finals :). The theme was…’breakout’, of course!

Picture yourself in this surreal getaway, swinging comfortably in a hammock between the towering palms. Your own personal hideout to take a break from reality. Then you suddenly wakeup drenched in perspiration in the sweltering heat and realize it’s 125F outside…because these beautiful palms are located in Death Valley!
Fart is most commonly used in reference to flatulence. The immediate roots are in the Middle English words ferten; which is akin to the Old High German word “ferzan” meaning ‘to break wind’. Fart is sometimes used as a nonspecific derogatory epithet, often to refer to ‘an irritating or foolish person’, and potentially an elderly person, described as an ‘old fart’.
