  • The bravery of being out of range….... Well it’s one of those amazing statements that conjures up a similar image for everyone…WAR For me it was the pilots who were instructed to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But then I continued the train of thought…...... and as the song suggests, and Danny elaborated, we can all be accused of ‘The bravery of being out of range’. It applies to so much of our everyday life. If I had Scott’s talent I would have illustrated a woman giving birth whilst her partner looks on, a teacher in a classroom, or me! attempting to penitrate the bonds of the merry men (how do you illustrate that?). But I don’t have the talent, so what I have created comes back to my original thought….WAR. Sjem quoted “War is old men talking and young men dying” Odysseus, Troy (the movie). I love this statement but does it continue on from there? / Do we perpetuate the story by glorifying its devastation? poets are inspired to write poetry about it / historians are inspired to write documentries about it / film makers are inspired to make movies about it / artists are inspired to create art about it / musicians are inspired to play music about it / designers are inspired to design t-shirts about it (myself included) Maybe, in the end, we all encourage war one way or another – as artists, we speculate on an experience we haven’t had, and therefore are perhaps the truest version of the brave who are out of range.

  • A heap of pics mixed with an iconic image from the Vietnam War As for the title I’ve been listening to a live version of this song all week Great line I’ve also offered it as a challenge to some talented friends Very bignods go to Roger Waters & Huynh Cong Ut DETAIL / I did a wall art for more detail

  • “War is old men talking and young men dying” Odysseus, Troy [the movie] Even if you didn’t like the movie; that’s a quote worth remembering. The t-shirt you see here has taken that quote; mixed it up with Danny’s theme to get: 1. A mushroom cloud of the nuclear variety. 2. The Pentagon, where the old men talk. 3. An F-117 Stealth Bomber, always out of range. These all combine to make a skull [which I told Lucan I’d never use on a t-shirt … but now I have … sort of]. If you think it doesn’t need the text, comment or send me a bubblemail, I have a version waiting in the wings without it.

  • Nolan set the yardstick rather high for this challenge with this so I decided to take it in a slightly different direction, also I had about 10 different ideas for this superb brief but this was the only one simple enough to turn into a t-shirt design. / /

At the moment, I’m having to be strong for a number of reasons and so today I needed to find something that would help me through. I knew exactly where to look for it and it worked yet again. I’m writing it in here just in case anyone else needs a little bit of extra strength just now…When we resolve to lift our life to its highest level, the strength of our soul guides us. It’s up to each of us to develop the courage to walk this way…and here’s the story I read again today…from ‘The Monk who sold his Ferrari by Robin Sharma” Once, in ancient India, there was an evil giant who owned a magnificent castle overlooking the sea. As the giant had been away for many years, fighting in wars, the children of the nearby village used to come into the giant’s beautiful garden and play with great delight. One day, the giant returned and threw all of the children out of his garden. He then erected a huge marble wall around the garden to keep the children out. / Winter came with bitter cold and the giant wished the warmth would soon return. Spring visited the village that lay below the giant’s castle, but the icy claws of winter refused to leave his garden. Then, one day, the giant finally smelled the fragrances of spring and felt the radiance of the sun through his windows. He ran into his garden. The children of the village had somehow managed to climb over the castle wall and were playing in the garden. It was because of their presence that the garden had been transformed from a wintry wasteland into a lush place filled with roses, daffodils and orchids. All the children laughed and giggled but one. The giant spotted a little boy who was much smaller than all the other children. Tears ran from his eyes as he didn’t have the strength to climb the wall into the garden. Suddenly the giant regretted his evil ways and ran towards the little boy to help him. The other children fled fearing for their lives but the tiny little boy stood his ground. ‘I will slay the giant’ he stammered. ‘I will defend our playground.’ / As the giant approached the child, he opened his arms. ‘I am a friend’ he said. ‘I have come to help you over the wall and into the garden. This will be your garden now.’ / The little boy was happy and was now a hero to the other children. He gave the giant his gold necklace and said ‘This is my lucky charm. I want you to have it.’ / From that day on the children played with the giant in his wonderful garden. But the brave little boy whom the giant loved the most didn’t return. As time went on the giant gre ill and frail. In those days it was the little boy who the giant thought of the most. / One day in the middle of a bitter winter, the giant saw a miraculous sight. Though most of the garden was covered in snow, at the centre stood a magnificent rosebush overflowing with spectacularly coloured flowers. Next to the roses stood the little boy who the giant loved. The boy was smiling sweetly. The giant danced with delight and rushed outside to embrace the child. ‘Where have you been all these years, my young friend? I’ve missed you with all my heart’ / The boy was thoughtful in his response ‘Many years ago you lifted me over the wall into your magical garden. Now, I have come to take you into mine.’ / Later that day, when the children came to visit the giant they found him lying lifeless on the ground. From head to toe, he was covered by a thousand beautiful roses…. Always be brave like the little boy. Stand your ground and follow your dreams. They will lead you to your destiny. Follow your destiny, it will lead you into the wonders of the universe. And always follow the wonders of the universe, for they will lead you to a special garden filled with roses.

This was my Grandmother’s Uncle Ernest James Newland V.C. born 1881 died 1949.Captain Newland was the only soldier born in Geelong to receive the Victoria Cross. He was awarded it for outstanding bravery on France’s Western front in 1917,when he led his men, under heavy fire to successfully repel 5 enemy attacks.Captain Newland was badly wounded later that year when the enemy attacked with flame throwers. On July 21,1917 King George V presented the Captain with the V.C for “conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty”.After the war he continued to serve in the reguar army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel before retireing in 1942.You can see hs medal(which he is wearing in the pic)on display at the war museum in Canberra.

  • Mrs. Bluebird is extremely protective of her nest and eyes me closely any time I approach. For some reason or other, Mr. Bluebird is contented to sit on a high branch and stare at me from afar. Guess he’s confident that the little wife can handle intruders capably without his assistance (or maybe he’s a coward!) Whatever the case, brave Mrs. Bluebird is always at ready alert.
