  • This tuba-tootin‘ shot was photographed during the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club’s invitation visit to one of the Port Macquarie Hastings Municipal Band practice nights. We were asked to make some publicity photographs for the band and had a great time with all the bright shiny things and the very co-operative musicians. The only things special about the shot were that I used manual settings and had my Vivitar DF200 slave flash unit mounted on a bracket on the left side of my camera with the head angled slightly away from the subject. This was set off by my pop-up flash being set to its lowest power and fitted with a diffuser. Fuji S9600: RAW, Macro, Manual settings of f/5 @ 1/60sec, Auto focus, ISO80, Hand held. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS. Visit the Music collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more musical delights. Enjoy! • Last night Grahame and I went to a Mothing night at Titchfied Haven Nature reserve, Hampshire. At 7-00pm a white sheet was laid out on a picnic table and they brought out 2 moth traps that had been set the night before, inside were lots of moths, some flew away as they opened the traps but most were just sitting on the sheet or egg boxes from the trap. They also showed up some that had been caught previously and they tipped them onto the sheet as well and we were able to photograph them. We were given tea/coffee and a couple of biscuits during the evening then at the end we were given the chance to go out onto the reserve and watch the traps being set up in the open, it was a white sheet and a large very very bright bulb. We got even more new moths. We finally left at about 11pm it was pitch dark, my knee ached and I was dying for a cup of coffee…........ but it was fun and interesting and I got some great moths to share with you…...................... Wingspan 28-35 mm. Common over most of the British Isles, this spectacular moth has large areas of metallic colouring on the forewings. The species is double-brooded, with moths on the wing between June and September. The larvae feed on plants such as nettle (Urtica dioica), and the species inhabits gardens, waste ground and marshy areas.

  • Brass and wrought iron is always an interesting combination, because one reflects light and the other absorbs it. I shot this inside the Block Arcade in Melbourne last month. I chose my angle carefully, to make use of the muted artificial light. But by shooting from this vantage point, I was also able to use depth of field to create a hint of the intricate mosaic floor one level further down. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a 70-300mm lens. F5.6, 1/45 sec, ISO 800, focal length 70mm. Featured by my co-host in PASSIONATE ABOUT VINTAGE, October 2009. 118-9797
