On April 23, 2009 this image was featured in the ImageWriting group. Taken on a cold, snowy day in January in the beautiful farming community of Westcliffe, Colorado, at the foot of the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountain range. This splendid restored old barn sat on a 160-acre ranch owned by our Georgia neighbors, the Irwins. Westcliffe sits adjacent to the historic mining town of Silver Cliff and both are at approximately 8000 feet in elevation. The sister towns are surrounded by more than one mountain range. To the west are the Sangre de Cristos at 14,000 feet in height. The Wet Mountains, Collegiate Mountains, and Spanish Peaks are respectively east, north, and south. You can’t beat the spectacular views! This is a summer view of the Irwin Barn. Please don’t copy or download this image. Castilleja miniata Thanks so much to Stephen Thomas for identifying this flower for me! Even though the Indian Paintbrush is the state flower of Wyoming, I captured this image in the Colorado Rockies in July. LEGEND: A young brave who tried to paint the sunset with his warpaints became frustrated that he could not duplicate the brilliant colors of nature. So he asked for guidance from the Great Spirit who then bestowed upon him the gift of paintbrushes laden with the the majestic colors that matched the sunet. With his new brushes, the young brave was able to paint his masterpiece. Once finished he left the spent brushes in fields across the landscape. These brushes sprouted the wildflowers now known as Indian Paintbrush. Click the button below to see other flower images. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please don’t copy or download this image. Although Breckenridge, Colorado is now a scenic ski resort area, it was once a gold mining town. The remains of this crumbling old wooden dredge boat floats on a pond it more than likely created. Note the hills of gravel behind the boat which were dredged up by one of nine dredge boats brought to this area around 1898. These mechnical miners dredged up glacial rock and separated it from the finer gravels from which they washed the gold. The Dredge boats floated on ponds they created while dredging the river beds to depths of 50 feet in a swath some 200 feet wide in search of gold. The last boat ceased operations in 1942. You will see these piles of gravel all along the route from Frisco right into the city limits of Breckenridge. At one point one of the dredge boats actually broke though right into the town of Breckenridge. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please don’t copy or download this image.
