The descend from the mount Elit was quite an experience. Only later our guide told us how many accidents happened on this track. We made 1000 meters down in 2 hours, while not moving more than perhaps 100 meters forward. The kind of a pile of sticks on the bottom of the picture is a prototype Papuan ladder. It was semi-helical, extremely slippery and missed lots of steps. I took the photo while waiting for my friends to get completely down, didn’t want to fall on their heads with the whole wobbly contraption. Irian Jaya (Indonesian Papua), Jayawijaya mountains – still some 3500 m.o.s.l.

This elderly woman sits at the window and contemplates the world outside. She does not see far beyond the window frame because her world has diminished considerably. Two years ago she was officially diagnosed with dementia after a life threatening surgery and long hospital stay. However, her family and friends noticed a difference in her personality over the last several years. Once a proud and hard working single mom, she raised two children during the 60’s and 70’s at a time when single parenthood was not as widely accepted as it is today. At present, she is reduced to little more than the passive demeanor of a quiet child. She is aware of the reduction in both her mental and physical abilities. She also understands that she is helpless to change anything. / It takes great courage to face the inevitable. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia; it accounts for 64 per cent of all dementias. For example right now in the US, Alzeihmer’s has surpassed diabetes and is the sixth leading cause of death. As baby boomers are rapidly approaching the age of retirement it is believed that 10 million baby boomers will develop Alzheimer’s in their lifetime. I was off to take some photographs of some waterfalls in the Breacon Beacons in Wales when I almost missed this scene. Had there not been a break in the cloud I may have missed it. It was probably the best drive by shooting photograph I have to date. I’ve had a little play in photoshop and thought I’d post the results. / The original was shot using a Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 27mm, f/8, 1/60 sec, ISO 400. No filters used and mounted on the car door. I then upped the exposure in photoshop with a layered PS approach and added some crows for effect. I hope you like it. © Copyright 2009 David Reid – redtree.me – All rights reserved.

Thankfully even through high winds and alot of rain, a tree in my daughters back yard stood with beautiful leaves still on its branches and a blanket of them on the ground, after tomorrow we are in for more high winds I am sure alot of these will be falling off like crazy.
