The labyrinth was a maze created by the brilliant engineer Daedalus for King Minos to hold prisoners from ever escaping. The Minotaur resided deep within it’s depths, later to be slain by the hero Theseus. Of course Daedalus himself later became a captive to his own creation. Since even he could not find a way to escape from his own construction, he devised wings of wax and feathers and string, and, along with his son, Icharus, flew from the confines of the labyrinth. Icharus, not heeding his father’s warning, flew on too high toward the sun, causing the wax in his wings to melt; and he fell to the earth, and his death. / The labyrinth has been observed in many cultures to be a metaphor of the depths of the human psyche. From the ideas of old Greece to medieval cathedrals to the modern ideas of the psychoanylist Carl Jung, the labyrinthean depths of our own minds may very well be of the very highest construction and capability, as well as our greatest obstacle toward true enlightenment and freedom. / Original work was created using watercolor and gouache media on Arches cold-press 180lb. cotton rag.

Or The man who had a creative block all week and got rid of it on Friday night. / I was supposed to do something about breakups for my friend’s new album. / This oughta sort that. I tried as best I could to recreate those crappy plastic chairs we had in school, because they’re vile. / I was going for a Space Invaders idea first of all but hadn’t thought of what to do for the Invader family. I wanted to show the erosion of someone. This concept blossomed along the way. Copyright © 2008 Simon Deevy. I still watch her video as it reminds me who I really am.. Here is a bit about this amazing Doctor/woman and her website below. / / Jill Bolte Taylor: Neuroanatomist Brain researcher Jill Bolte Taylor studied her own stroke as it happened—and has become a powerful voice for brain recovery. / Why you should listen to her: One morning, a blood vessel in Jill Bolte Taylor’s brain exploded. As a brain scientist, she realized she had a ringside seat to her own stroke. She watched as her brain functions shut down one by one: motion, speech, memory, self-awareness … Amazed to find herself alive, Taylor spent eight years recovering her ability to think, walk and talk. She has become a spokesperson for stroke recovery and for the possibility of coming back from brain injury stronger than before. In her case, although the stroke damaged the left side of her brain, her recovery unleashed a torrent of creative energy from her right. From her home base in Indiana, she now travels the country on behalf of the Harvard Brain Bank as the “Singin’ Scientist.” “How many brain scientists have been able to study the brain from the inside out? I’ve gotten as much out of this experience of losing my left mind as I have in my entire academic career.” Jill Bolte Taylor

I wanted it to reach out and grab the viewer, it deals with what we as human beings go through with life and how some times it just pulls us into a darkness where alot of people just fade away into their mind never to return. This is for the contest In The Moment Thank you for viewing my work. Image copyright © 2007, Larry Fridel. A quickie to work on the ol’ caricature skills, using photos of me and 2 of my studio friends to sketch from in pencil, and then underpainting in Photoshop on the Wacom. Good fun really!

This was a great day. / I had collected a lot of information and proceeded to sign a treaty with my mind allowing me access to the resources of the wasps. / Wasps do all the maintenance and construction work in my mind and they can be called on to deal with any nasty threats that encroach on my beloved machine. They’re a powerful workforce and I had been granted the use of them, after submitting my designs for careful scrutineering. / First we had to build a giant deck so we weren’t working where the problems were. Then a big Science and Technology building went up. Its the one with the flag showing a microscope. (I had a microscope when I was a kid.) / All that was needed then was someplace for the wasps to go on break, a few admin buildings and a giant dredger with which to haul up bits of mind. These could then be processed and healed in the S&T wing and put back. / Things are well underway here and the success of the project was off the scale I had set for it. Copyright © 2008 Simon Deevy. I think this is what goes on in our brains when we dream. Firing on all cylinders, so to speak, the neural pathways are alive with activity, spinning all manner of images behind our closed eyelids….

A fractal artwork depicting the wondrous complexity, and ultimate simplicity, of the infinite neural network connections within our minds involved in the process of thought itself. / / Each ‘neuron’ in the image, the terminus of the spiral vortices, is infinitely connected with every other ‘neuron’ in the image. / / Because this is a true fractal artwork, I can conceptually compile the fractal formula to reproduce this artwork at high-resolution to any given size. The original was compiled to print at 6×5 feet at 200 pixels per inch. Please contact me for any special requests regarding custom prints larger than can be purchased through my RedBubble product gallery.

When I was small / I was been plugged by a mysterious tube / My imagination been sucked away / and been put away in a tiny jar But my experimental doctor didn’t stop there / He wants to know my thoughts, fears and desire / He wants my youth As I slowly growing out of my childhood period / I sense my experiment with the mad doctor / may end But I do not know whether that day will ever come… © By Hung Lin 2008
