“Seven Swallows Sitting” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © A family of Australian Woodswallows perched tightly together on a wire preening each other against a background of bright blue sky. Bowen, Queensland. “The swallow, bonny birdie, comes sharp / twittering o’er the sea, / And gladly is her carol heard for the sunny / days to be; / She shares not with us wintry glooms, / but yet, no faithless thing, / She hunts the summer o’er the earth with / wearied little wing.”
“Rolling On” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © An approaching afternoon storm appears on the horizon while a field of hay bales are still glowing in the sun. / Bowen, Queensland. “And then to dwell in sovereign barns, / And dream the days away, / The grass so little has to do, / I wish I were the hay!” / ~Emily Dickinson
Looking up from 30m towards the sun, you can see divers ascending the wall to the boat. This beautiful temperate reef at Bowen Island has a series of vertical walls, covered in colourful sponges and bryzoa. The sandy bottom at around 35m is a foavourite gathering place for Port Jackson sharks. Jervis Bay Marine Park, Australia
Hobarts Bowen Bridge, reflecting the orange sunset glow. / Driving home from work I was presented with the great colours and reflections, and as always, the camera was “riding shotgun”
Yet again my fascination with Hobarts Bowen Bridge and it’s surrounds. / you get a feeling of awe when, standing underneath it as the traffic rumbles past above your head. it sound as if the Bridge itself is “growling” a low rumbling tone.

“Time Traveler” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © An old farm “horse” (Chevrolet truck) that now spends its / days as a mobile fruit and vegetable stall on the side of / the road at Gumlu, a little town on a desolate / stretch of the highway between Bowen and Home Hill. / The Chevy serves its retirement days well displaying / luscious mangoes and firm ripe tomatoes on its canvas / covered tray tempting highway travelers to stop and / sample its succulent wares. / Still bright eyed, it leaves its roadside vigil each day at / dusk to meander its way back along a dusty track to its / owners nearby farm. / Hopefully the old Time Traveler will see many more / daily trips up and down memory lane so that others can / enjoy its presence while reminiscing of days gone by. “Gosh that takes me back… or is it forward? / That’s the trouble with time travel, you never / can tell.” / ~ Dr. Who Time Traveler was featured in the: Image Writing group – Jan 09
Another take with beautiful model, singer and dancer Sydney Jo Jackson, who was a real pleasure to work with. The delightful Nicola Hamilton came over to do the make up at very short notice. Part of the brief was to produce some B/W shots, and as I was after a low key effect with smooth tones, I rigged a black tent arrangement to stop light bouncing around the room and give maximum density to the shadow areas. The lighthouse that can be seen on the point was established in 1899. This tower is believed to be a “first” in New South Wales. It is erected on a flat concrete base and is the first tower to be constructed of concrete blocks – made on the ground – lifted into position, then cement-rendered on both the inside and the outside. In 1993 the original lighthouse was decommissioned and the new solar powered lighthouse commenced operation. The lighthouse and keepers cottages are now owned by the RAN – Royal Australian Navy and the area is used as a Defence training and weapons range. The light house is heritage listed. In the mid-ground is Bowen Island, a conservation area and home to around 10,000 Little or Fairy penguins. This area is not accessible by the public.
