  • Classified as Lower Risk, the Congo or Forest Buffalo can be found in Africa’s Rainforest. Mainly grazing on grass and lower level leaves, they are nevertheless powerful fighters and can run at speeds of up to 57 km/hr. Note the swept back horns like the Bongo which allows them to escape predators without tangling up in vegetation. Where humans have introduced domestic cattle, buffalo populations have sometimes been affected by diseases and parasites carried by the cattle. Buffalo are also threatened by illegal hunting and loss of habitat.

  • This crafty cow threaded its long horns through the barbed wire fence, got down on its knees, and munched the grass just outside its normal reach. Aren’t we a lot like that? Going through all sorts of trouble to grab “something better” when everything we need is usually right under our feet! / P.S. In case you’re wondering, I did watch as the process reversed itself and the bovine wonder gingerly manuevered its head and massive horns back through the wires, straightened its knees, and returned to home base without a hitch.

  • In American Western culture, the bison is commonly referred to as “buffalo”; however, this is a misnomer Though both bison and buffalo belong to the same family, Bovidae, the term ‘buffalo’ properly applies only to the Asian Water Buffalo and African Buffalo. The gaur, a large, thick-coated ox found in Asia, is also known as the Indian Bison, although it is in the genus Bos and thus not a true bison. The American and European bison are the largest terrestrial mammals in North America and Europe. Like their cattle relatives, bison are nomadic grazers and travel in herds, except for the non-dominant bulls, which travel alone or in small groups during most of the year. American bison are known for living in the Great Plains. Both species were hunted close to extinction during the 19th and 20th centuries but have since rebounded, although the European bison is still endangered. Unlike the Asian Water Buffalo, the bison has never really been domesticated, although it does appear on farms occasionally. It is raised now mostly on large ranches in the United States and Canada for meat. Wild herds are found in Yellowstone, Utah’s Antelope Island, South Dakota’s Custer State Park, Alaska, and northern central Canada Other Categories / Animals / Apes / Architecture / Baby Animals / Bears / Birds / Big Cats / Elephants / Fish / Insects / Macro / Nature / Reptiles

  • I remembered the story of Ferdinand from when I was a kid and when I went past this bull under a tree near the base of Mount Buffalo I knew I just had to get out and capture him. He’s aged a bit, and there’s not too many flowers to sniff, but he still seems content. Find out more about Ferdinand the Bull @ Wikipedia

  • I was driving along side some of the many paddocks that frequent my area (the Hawkesbury area) when I came across this cow, the light seemed to be pretty decent and seeing as how the cow was a few metres away I decided it would be a good opportunity to test out my new 55-200mm lens.. / The cow just would not look at me (unusual for a cow) and then finally it decided to sneak a glance so I snapped the shutter and this was the result.. / Post processing involved adjusting the exposure, contrast and levels, and then applying a vignette and a monochrome filter. / I havent uploaded anything for quite some time so I decided to throw this image to the wind and see if it flies or crashes and burns.. / As per usual comments and critiquing are more than welcome, and thanks very much for taking a look! • Oils 36”x24” on canvas board (2006) / Commission – SOLD This painting was a commission that took several months to complete. I took individual photos of the bull & the cows & combined them into this portrait. The background is actually the paddock where the bull lives, a farm located past Wingham, in the Manning Valley NSW. After wandering around the many cows & calves with the camera I picked out the most colourful ones to paint alongside the bull. The large brindle Brahma cow was a spectacular animal so she was one of the main choices. / The gum trees in the background were a perfect setting for / the portrait.
