The Great American Buffalo, or Bison, symbolizes sacredness, life, great strength, abundance, gratitude, and builder of life. Buffalo provides all good things for living, and bestows great curing powers. Nearly rubbed out permanently by unscrupulous white men in the 19th century. Today, Buffalo flourishes and are raised by many nations of Native Peoples in North America. / The Hawk sign in the center of the Buffalo skull is my sign. / Artwork by Zeke Sena, New Mexico, USA.

El Antilope – The Antelope, depicts moving with speed and grace, awareness of one’s surroundings and the ability to advance quickly. A fascinating trait of Antelope is that they are quite capable of jumping a barbed wire fence; instead, however, they will approach the fence at a run, drop down to their knees, lower their head and slide underneath the lowest strand. A beautiful and remarkable creature.

Illustrating Buffalo is a favorite subject of mine, as is Eagle. My Buffalo shield is set against a Buffalo hide backdrop.
Abundance – The buffalo or bison is considered by many tribes to be a symbol of abundance for it was the meat of the buffalo that fed the people, the hides that provided clothing and shelter, the bones and sinew provided tools of survival. Sacred, Noble.
The Buffalo was one of the most respected animals among American Indians. Its spirit was praised before every hunt with a tribal ritual dance. The buffalo supplied virtually everything that the Indians needed to stay alive; food, clothing, tools, and housing. These noble beasts were virtually wiped out by unscrupulous persons attempting to eradicate the primary food supply of the Indian. The featured warrior is Kiowa Apache, Ah Keah Boat, known as “Two Hatchet.”

This photo was taken at Lester’s Farm on Brookfield Road. Located in St. John’s, Newfoundland it is a great place to purchase fresh produce, wander the corn maze, or visit the petting barn. The animals are friendly, and treated very well. I love to visit and feed the animals, they are always happy for treats from visitors. Special Thanks to Colin Tobin for lending me his camera for these shots.
