  • This walk runs through the Melalueca forest Melaleuca armillaris between Tathra and Wallagoot just behind the beach dunes, within Bournda National Park, NSW Far South Coast, AU. • The historic Tathra Wharf was built in 1862 and was a crucial loading point for farmers on the south coast and snowy mountains. Steamships regularly landed at Tathra to collect live cattle and pigs, as well as lots of produce bound for Sydney. It is now a very popular spot for fisherman! / / The wharf was restored in the 1980s and is now listed under the National Trust. For more info on Tathra Wharf check out THIS website. • The White-fronted Chat Epthianura albifrons is a small (12cm) bird of open country usually hanging salt lakes, samphire swamps, low open heath and even in farmland. They usually occur in small flocks, around a dozen birds, but sometimes, many hundreds and even thousands are together at any one time, an amazing sight thats for sure. But not this time, about 10 birds graced my presence on the hind-dunes of Wallagoot Lake in Bournda National Park on the NSW Far South Coast. This bird is a male. To see a female that was in the same flock, click HERE Steve is the Principal Ecologist at EnviroKey providing specialist ecological services across Australia.

  • The Pied Oystercatcher Haematopus longirostris is listed as a threatened species in NSW due to disturbances to coastal feeding, nesting and roosting areas caused by beach combing, horse riding, dog walking and 4wd vehicles (gee, I have probably offended half of Australia there!). But they are also predated on by foxes and are especially impacted by hydrological changes to estuaries as they can have a dramatic impact on their habitats. This gentleman was seen foraging the shoreline of Wallagoot Lake in Bournda National Park on the NSW Far South Coast where not only are all these activities illegal, but a very active fox and wild dog baiting program appears to be helping as this pair was even breeding, see the nest site HERE Steve is the Principal Ecologist at EnviroKey providing specialist ecological services across Australia.

  • The Pied Oystercatcher Haematopus longirostris is listed as a threatened species in NSW. While birding this morning (August 2009) I came across a pair nesting at Wallagoot Lake in Bournda National Park on the NSW Far South Coast. I didnt want to get too close to her, but I just couldnt help but think, if I had to sit on eggs for three weeks, I would want a view like that also! Click HERE for a view of her mate. • This Australian Pipit Anthus australis was seen jogging on the shores of Wallagoot Lake in Bournda National Park on the NSW far south coast. These moderate sized birds (16cm) are typically seen in open grasslands and clearing, but this guy was keen to check out the dune country. Taken with a Canon EOS1000D with a 150-500 @ 500.
