I really like the colours in this, particularly the blue in his eye…

I created the balloon from a picture I took of a plaque on a building in London, the teacup belongs to my wife (who is the woman in this) and I took a picture of it on our kitchen table. The rest of the stuff in this are my textures and designs applied to a scan of paper that was changed to blue in elements. The clouds are preset shapes in elements and the dress and dog are royaly-free cliparts from a couple old books I have that I scanned. I think this would make a lovely card (hint, hint!) / / The title is from the name of a Tori Amos song from her “American Doll Posse” album. Oil painting. This is for Millie my daughter. Millie has autism and has from a young age enjoyed a bounce. She bounces on her moon hopper while bouncing on the trampoline at the same time! With her red hair and the static it’s quite a sight.
With the global economy caught in the gravity of the financial crisis, it’s sad that programs like the Constellation Project will have a long wait before anything truly gets off the ground. / / NASA’s Constellation Project is set up to finish the International Space Station, retire the Shuttle Fleet and build a whole new fleet of space vehicles which will take us back to the Moon, then Mars and then the places beyond. / / But with Congressional limitations and funding cutbacks due to the financial crisis, as well as being stuck with a complicated and restrictive “go as you pay” finance structure it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing any groundbreaking manned space flights in the naughties. / / This image represents a fleeting memory of a childhood dream to see man explore our planets and then the stars beyond and it’s one of the few things as a child I looked up to America for. / / The universe is a big place and we’re yet to make it out of our solar system but without programs like the Constellation Project, man may never ever get to make another giant leap. / / DETAIL / / / /

While playing around practicing with flashes, I thought I’d do some test shots to show the effects of different modifiers. But for comparison, here’s a direct flash shot. There’s shadows on the wall, on the dog from its tongue, it’s hard and unflattering, and can be a lot worse with a person. When using a speedlight one of the easiest solutions is to bounce it. It’s pretty much eliminated the wall shadows, softened the light as a whole, but there’s still shadows underneath the mouth from the light bouncing down off the ceiling. To fill in the shadows on the subject you can combine bouncing the flash off the ceiling with a bounce card. A business card held on with an elastic band will get the job done, and some flashes have them built in. This is the built in card on the SB900 / It’s reduced shadows in the subject, introduced a catchlight in the eye, but has also once more added a slight shadow to the wall behind. Nowhere near as bad as the direct flash. You can buy products such as the Lumiquest Pocketbouncer. These work on the same principal as a bounce card but are much larger. / The pocket bouncer stops light bouncing off the ceiling and just directs it to the subject. You can get all sorts of types, including those with holes to filter some light through to the ceiling. This is the pocketbouncer, but there’s a whole range of different items available. / It’s gives a lot more direct light than bouncing, but like direct flash, it’s got more noticable shadows, though not as pronounced. You’ll have seen flashes with what looks like a bit of tupperware on top. / These diffusers are my favourite. This came with my SB900 but you can buy them to fit most any speedlight for around $20-30 / Pointed up or at an angle it’ll still bounce light off the ceiling providing a softer light, and works quite well in locations where you can’t bounce off a ceiling. Another great way to get rid of those pesky shadows on walls is to use an off camera flash to overexpose the wall behind. This can mess with your metering a bit, but like anything in photography, a bit of fiddling with settings and you should be able to find something that works for you.

The City Gardens punk card was the monthly postcard with the various shows scheduled for the month. Anyone who claims to have been a part of the second generation punk scene (Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains) has fond memories of the City Gardens shows and the monthly mailing of the Punk Card. This version of the tee shirt has a random collection of bands from a variety of months between the early 80’s and mid 90’s. Featured bands include: Ramones, Damned, ALL, Screaming Blue Messiahs, GWAR, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Bouncing Souls, Rollins Band, Iggy Pop, DOA, Dickies, 7 Seconds, Circle Jerks, Agent Orange, Social Distortion, Killing Joke, Danzig and so many more!

The annual ‘Village Olympics’ were held yesterday 20/08/09, with the villages of Ashcombe, Luton, and Ideford, which are all in close proximity to Dawlish, Devon, England, competing against each other in some unusual sporting events. / It was great fun to watch. The gentleman on the ‘Hopper’ was taking part in the ‘Grand National’, complete with water jumps like Beechers Brook in Aintree.
