The foreshore at Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex, Uk. This was taken at low tide about an hour before dawn, showing a seaweed covered boulder and one of the WW2 pillboxes that have been eroded off the nearby cliffs. Signed giclee art prints available at www.henroben.co.uk
This is sunrise at a beach north of Dunedin,NZ, along the Otago coast. These boulders,( Moeraki boulders) are concretions, some up to 3 meters in diameter, which have been formed by precipitation of calcite from pore waters in the Moeraki Formation. / Local Māori legends explained the boulders as the remains of eel baskets, calabashes, and kumara washed ashore from the wreck of an Arai-te-uru, a large sailing canoe. This legend tell of the rocky shoals that extend seaward from Shag Point as being the petrified hull of this wreck and a nearby rocky promontory as being the body of the canoe’s captain. / The area where we were had roughly 30 or so of these boulders. Though the clouds were a bit too numerous to catch any spectacular sunrise colors, the boulders were fascinating to observe. / Just as we were leaving the sun poked through the clouds to shimmer off the waters.
Shot at Titahi Bay, with a storm setting in. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm Nikkor lens Other work in this series: / Calm before the storm / Remains of the Day / Titahi Rocks / Step aside!
BEST VIEWED WHEN ENLARGED This is Saltwick Bay, near Whitby, North Yorkshire, England just before the sun broke the horizon. The wonder of the light made it worthwhile getting up so early! Apart from the amazing sky that morning, I like how the colours in the sky reflected on the wave platform filling the viewfinder with pink and blue.

A whirlpool caught in a long exposure in a magical place called Illinois Canyon in Starved Rock State Park in Illinois. Camera: Canon 5D / Lens: Canon 24-70mm / Filter: Heliopan thin Polarizing filter / Aperture: f18 / Exposure: 30 seconds Not the type of image I could bracket to capture exactly the same and layer the two together. What I did is save the darker version of this and worked in Curves in Photoshop and lightened it up. Then opened both images up and layered them and removed the light areas by darkening with the eraser/brush tool at about 35% by removing the lighter layer until she looked pretty.
Location: Ottawa Canyon in Starved Rock State Park in Utica, Illinois To me this is what it is all about. I’ll give you a brief self analysis on this one. The corner on the left is dark. The underside of the canyon is dark. I could have made it brighter, but chose against it. / I don’t want every part of the image to be fully exposed. I don’t want every corner lit to match the rest of the image. It is the separation of light and dark to create a mood that I love. I am not always after it, but sometimes I get it, and when I do, I welcome it. Why ruin the mood of an image trying to make everything in the same light. Camera: Canon 5D / Lens: Canon 17-40mm / Filter: Heliopan Thin circular polarizer / Aperture: f22 / Iso: 50 / Shutter Speed: 5 seconds / Weather Conditions: Overcast and cloudy / Vehicle that got me here: 1996 Ford Ranger (just thought I’d throw that in for kicks) / Cost of getting the shot: PRICELESS.

As a child this large rock sat only about an inch from the ground with a smaller rock underneath, yet it was balanced. I visit this rock every year, and each year the rock under the large top stone has heaved this immense boulder up further! Amazing how nature has its own balancing act! / Photographed in Mountaindale, NY, USA /
