My bottlebrush is just beginning to bloom; it didn’t take this hummingbird long to discover the very first blossom and relish its sweetness.
Not only humans can enjoy the drive in window at Sonic or McDonald’s; hummers have their own variety. Sip and hover is their version of a slush on the run! Ruby-throated hummingbird enjoying the nectar of bottlebrush blossom!
I love the website “Whatbird.com” because it not only describes each bird but also provides an audio clip of its song. The “song” of a hummingbird sounds more like the whirring of an engine or some kind of alien hovercraft than an actual song! I never tire of watching these energetic little feather balls hovering, sometimes only inches away from me! Click here to see and hear the ruby-throated hummer on whatbird.com

Brilliant scarlet bottlebrush – Melaleuca – belong to a large genus of evergreen trees and shrubs which are indigenous to Australia, except for a handful of species found in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and coastal south-east Asia. Some species have beautiful papery bark which peels off in large sheets. They bear profuse brush-like flowers with showy stamens and their nectar provides food for birds and small animals. The leathery leaves are small and are either cylindrical or flat. Melaleucas are remarkably free from pests and disease. Info from Australian Native Plants – Random House. Photo taken at Harvey Dam, which is south of Perth in sw Western Australia.
The Scarlet Honeyeater Myzomela sanguinolenta is a small bird that inhabits rainforest, eucalypt forests and woodlands, paperbark swamps and heathlands of the east coast of NSW, most of the QLD coast and the far east of Victoria. I captured this male working a Callistemon in a small gully near the shores of Twofold Bay early November 2009, south of Eden, on the NSW Far South Coast with a Canon EOS100D with a 150-500 @ 500 handheld.
