  • The aurora borealis, or what is commonly referred to as the northern lights, dances over the peak of Twelvemile Summit in interior Alaska. The sun rises just slightly below the horizon at around 2:30 am in August. Some native Alaskans believe that the lights are the souls of their ancestors coming to Earth and by waving or whistling to them they come closer to the ground. 30 sec. exposure at f22 Northern Alaska Circa 2007

  • Taken in January 2005, just south of Perth, Scotland. I looked out the window here late one evening to see a “cloud” of luminous green oriented downwards – “that’s no cloud!” and 5mins later I was a couple of miles away in the middle of nowhere on the road south of Moncrieffe Hill, admiring the pretty greens and reds :)

  • When I start to create a digital abstract, I never really know what it’s going to end up like; sometimes something comes out of the background to overshadow what I’ve been preparing as the main focus of the piece. / / As in this image, when I realized that the backdrop was way more interesting than the design in front, / I was tempted to ditch the design and let the background stand on its own. But it looked more interesting with the design layer faded into near oblivion, giving the digital smoke something to react against. / / Was going to title the piece Digital Smoke, but thought that was somewhat unimaginative; I wanted to recognize a perceived aura of the aurora borealis. And I like alliteration. / / As always, I am ecstatic when a piece fits nicely onto a card with minimal cropping damage

  • In February 2008 there was a excellent aurora borealis show which was almost constant during a whole weekend. This picture was taken in Reykjavík and the mountain you see is loved by people in Reykjavík, it name is Esjan and is very popular for mountain walking.

  • Another Aurora. This one captured in Churchill, Manitoba Canada. I was there to photgraph Polar Bears. When an Aurora was spotted we were taken out on the tundra to view it. We were allowed out of the bus for only a few minutes due to fear of polar bears and bitter cold. I had time to grab a couple of shots. Not the best quality, but will give some idea of the beauty of the Northern Lights.

  • The night I took this photograph there were not so much aurora activity going on but fortunatly they showed themselves once in a while and fortunatly I managed to capture this show you see in the photograph. The moon gave also some great additional light for the mountains you see in the far as well as the snow laid ground.

  • Aurora Borealis reflecting off of melt ice of slave river, NWT, Canada

  • Aurora borealis photographed in November 2003. A very active solar stream gave superb displays even at low latitudes. This shot was taken with a Mamiya 645 and 35mm f3.5 wide angle lens near to where I live. Film was Kodak E200 push processed to ISO 800. As a result the original is very grainy. Such a display has not occured since I moved to digital!
