When I was teaching high school English, Emily Dickinson’s poem about HOPE was one of my all-time favorites. The great American poet compares hope to a little bird that never stops singing, even during the most turbulent storms, yet demands nothing from the one it encourages. In the present day when despair and doubts abound, this little poem from the past makes a welcome comeback. I took the photo of the Carolina wren as it perched jauntily on a branch near my patio. I love the wren because, in spite of its small size, it has a mighty song. I think it’s a fitting image to couple with Emily Dickinson’s poem. May the picture and the poetry bring hope your way! (The photo is also available without the poem. Just let me know if you’d like that instead.)
If a butterfly can flap its wings a thousand times a minute to reach its destinations, imagine what you can do! (Author unknown) The monarch butterfly on a bed of phlox is a lovely scene from my mother’s garden. The phlox were cuttings taken from the garden of my mentor during my practice teaching days in college over 30 years ago. Dear old Mrs. Branton who gave me the cuttings has long since passed away, but her flowers live on and so do the memories I have of her. She was a great inspiration to me and she would have approved of the sentiment on this image!

I couldn’t find the author of this little poem, but I coupled it with my image of a male Eastern bluebird in flight and thought it might be a source of encouragement to someone who’s a little down and in need of a word of hope.
