  • Well here is another pinhole photo of a model skeleton taken yesterday at work. Sometimes when I have an idle moment….. which is of course a relative statement…... I play around with the students and make mad little cameras out of scraps of wood or old cardboard boxes or whatever is around just to amuse myself….. it’s one of the best ways to teach old skills…. make it fun and make it relevant. The students who pass through my darkroom are all digital babies and it’s up to me to breath passion into old analouge techniques like pinhole photography and make it relevant to them. So partly I make it lots of fun and tell them analouge darkroom skills are the closest thing to magic they will get in their daily life and partly I ride them really hard to learn those skills well. When they see me produce striking images like these ones instantly and effortlessly…..( well shoot the shot then print the negative then make a contact print, so about 20 or 30 minutes all up)......... they try really really hard to do much better than me….. which is of course my devious plan all along. try looking at this image at a larger size to see how good the depth of field is in it.

  • So this is bits and pieces of a number of things. First, the face is from my drawing “Sudden Departure” except I added some embellishing. The background is actually a lavender and gold forest I, gulp, painted – (i rarely go there). Of course, for this version I turned it DARK. / The “wings” are two little silk leaves I had here. Richard Bone, the wonderful ambient artist/composer inspired this as he used my drawing for an album cover last year. He needed something dark for the inside of the cd, so I obliged…

  • I made this sculpture a few years ago for my upstairs foyer. It’s almost 8 feet long by 16” wide at its hips. I drew the form and cut the base out of plywood. Painted that. I live near Lake Michigan and one day I took a trash bag with me and filled it as far as I could with driftwood. Brought it home, let it dry, and then laid the wood on top of my form. To my delight, I used up everything in my bag and it completely filled the piece. I felt like I had been working backwards on a puzzle. Then I painted the entire piece. I like how the wood I chose ended up looking like bones. She is a quiet presence in my house. It’s never been exhibited.
