My dad has been on my mind lately. Two weeks ago when my daughter was home, she was asking me all sorts of questions about him and researching his war record. She’s an aspiring writer and is usuing him as a character in a piece that she’s working on. He’s been dead for 12 years this September. My father was may things. He was a small town lawyer, an almost orphan, an alcoholic, a farm boy. I was his favorite and never knew why until a few months before his death. My youngest niece and her then fiance were making the obligatory meet the grandparents trip to my hometown in Kansas. My niece’s fiance, a history teacher, was asking my dad about his World War Two experiences. We had known that he was in the Air Force and in the Pacific. We knew that he had wanted to be a pilot but wasn’t allowed to fly because of color blindness. That was probably a lucky thing for the war effort, if his later skill at driving a car was any indication of his talent for flying planes. What he had told no one, until that conversation with Bob, was that he was on one of the planes that accompanied the Enola Gay to Hiroshima. Lawyers during the war either went into JAG or intelligence. My dad was a sort of spy! After his return from the war, he told my mother that he didn’t want any more children. Sworn to secrecy about his war experiences, he had periods of depression. He drank too much during these times. Not much was known about radiation during the 1950s. I think that he was probably certain that he was dying of radiation poisoning and that I would be born horribly deformed. When I came out healthy, it was probably the biggest relief of his life. My birth is a text book example of the bonding that goes on between parent and child. He didn’t see my sister until she was two. He was sent overseas just as she was born. When I was born, he was home and helped my mother with all of the new baby work. By the time my brother was born, he was over his worry that he would cause a child to be born maimed. I wish we had all known of this sooner. I grew up with so many questions about my birth and childhood. Nothing in my parents marriage made any sense to me. With this bit of information everything fell into place. I became a real adult at the age of 45.

This is one piece of Newfoundland History which is a little more unusual then the rest. The story of the Bell Island Explosion has always facinated me, so I thought I’d share it with everyone here on the bubble. / Bell island From Wikipedia: / On April 2, 1978, there was a loud explosion on Bell Island that caused damage to some houses and the electrical wires in the surrounding area. Two cup-shaped holes about two feet deep and three feet wide marked the major impact. A number of TV sets in Lance Cove, the surrounding community, also exploded at the time of the blast. Weather men confirmed that atmospheric conditions at the time were not conducive to lightning. The blast was heard 45 kilometers away in Cape Broyle. Apparently U.S. Vela satellites picked up the event. The incident was investigated promptly by two representatives from a U.S. weapons laboratory at Los Alamos, according to the news media.(1) It has been speculated that the explosion was ball lightning. However, a recent documentary aired on The History Channel about electromagnetic pulse weapons speculated that it may have been a result of top secret experiments by either the Russian or U.S. governments, involving high energy beams focused into the ionosphere that where attracted by the iron in abandoned mines. From The History Channel: / On a calm Sunday morning in 1978, residents of Bell Island, Newfoundland hear an odd, high-pitched hum, immediately followed by a sudden and terrifying blast resounding for hundreds of miles. Witnesses observe a “straight shaft of light” descending from the sky, and a barrage of violent electrical phenomenon. Outbuildings are destroyed, livestock electrocuted, televisions explode and power lines vaporize. Observed from space, the light emissions from the “boom” are more powerful than those of the Hiroshima blast. The Invisible Machine unravels the mystery of the Bell Island “boom” and in doing so takes a chilling look at the U.S. military’s experimentation with electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons,”e-bombs”, directed energy weapons that can destroy electrical and communications systems but leave people seemingly unharmed. We interview eye witnesses, an EMP weapons designer, scientists, journalists, policy makers and activists who warn that these weapons are real and may have been used by the US military during its “shock and awe” campaign against Iraq in 2003. While the United States continues to develop and experiment with these weapons of mass destruction, the questions remain: were the bizarre events on Bell Island in 1978 related to early testing gone wrong and were directed EMP weapons at Baghdad’s electricity generation plant the most recent experiment? If so, what are the consequences of unleashing this powerful force? The Invisible Machine pulls back the veils of secrecy to find the answers. / Photo by Kevin Kroeker

Sad news this morning.. 80 people killed in Jaipur after a series of bombs planted around the city… no claim of responsibility yet, but typically people are pointing the finger at Pakistan and/or other Islamist groups inside India, as targets were Hindu sites. A new agreement banning the manufacture and use of Cluster Bombs was signed by over 100 Nations, in Ireland this week. Although Australia is a signatory to the agreement, it has an exemption to partake in joint exersises with nations that haven’t signed. Laos, was bombed during the Vietnam war with more bombs than were dropped in the entire Second World War. Many of them Cluster Bombs. War was never declared on Laos. Laos still suffers the death and maiming of men, women and children from the millions of unexploded bombs that were droped over 33 years ago. Laos is not the only Nation that still suffers from bombs dropped in wars long over. One of the agreements is that nations that have dropped these horrible weapons, will have to pay for their removal. Is this the reason why the USA and others have refused to sign the agreement ? The trilogy Love Bombed, Me and Amsterdam and Love Bombed in Amsterdam combined reached 1000 views today. Two of these works are collaborations with Vasile Stan. The combined numbers for the three works is 1001 views, 193 Comments and 41 favourites. I would like to thank all my redbubble friends for their views and support of these three works. I have always loved the idea of working collaboratively with another artist and looking at life and art through different lens and from different perspectives. Each perspective, whether subtle or powerful offers a fresh way of seeing. Collaborating with Vasile in Love Bombed in Amsterdam and Me in Amsterdam, Vasile has taken my original painting of Love Bombed and a photo self portrait and changed them both into a new story, a new vision. I would like to say a special thank you to Vasile for his artistic eye and his exciting vision. Just felt excited reaching this combined milestone and wanted to say thank you to all my friends on RedBubble who have offered their fresh view and perspective on these three works. Anthea

I found an interesting work of art at an Ann Arbor yard sale. Took me two years to figure out the creator of that pencil and ink piece: Maude McVeigh Hutchins (4 Mai 46). Maude Hutchins made her name as an artist during the 20s, 30s, & 40s. Around 1950, Maude Hutchins began a successful career as a novelist. Her themes generally regarded sexual awakening. Maude Hutchins died in 1992 aged 102. Her novels are enjoying resurgent popularity. Before 1948, Maude Hutchins had been married to lawyer Robert Maynard Hutchins for 27 years. At age 30, in 1929, Robert M. Hutchins became the youngest president ever (still) of a major American university: U of Chicago. R.M. Hutchins remained in that capacity for 21 years before becoming the director of the Ford Foundation. He initiated educational reforms, many adopted by other institutions. Hutchins (who probably could have been president) was a pacifist who ironically became the principle contractor ($400 millions worth) in the creation of the first atomic bombs; he was the only civilian outside the Pentagon that officially knew about the Manhattan Project. You may recall that the first sustained chain reaction (Enrico Fermi 1942) was initiated under the abandoned U of C football stadium. Hutchins’ U of C contracts also included operation of the Oak Ridge, TN plutonium factory (WWII). After Hiroshima, Hutchins spent the remainder of his life opposing the arms race (died 1977). My fascination with Hutchins springs from his secular philosophical view of morality. From the time of his appointment as the Dean of the Yale Law School onward (mid 20s), he grappled with society’s need for moral education. Hutchins’ pointed out that the scientific method does not give us the knowledge or wisdom for how to manage science; it is something only a moral education can achieve. Nearly all of his efforts to inculcate morality into academics (outside theological schools), and later into corporate thinking, failed. I find Hutchins philosophical view interesting because I understand that a person’s moral view is a much higher standard than one’s minimum legal responsibility; and I can see that living merely to a minimum legal responsibility will not sustain the fabric of society— yet it is the trend. The problem for morality is that it is like both gravity and the very essence of life: we all know that it exists, but none have yet quantified it scientifically.

  • My Thoughts Involving Graffiti.

Vandalism, destruction, and a lack of respect for public property surround graffiti. It has been demonized by the mainstream. I, however, have a different point of view. Coming from an extensive artistic background( roughly 17 of my 22 years on this earth…) I’ve learned to appreciate many art forms and their execution. Alas, none have compared to graffiti. The lettering is simply a vessel for the art that transcends the normal artistic form. Art as a culture has been largely compressed into a box of rules and techniques that dominate expression. I ask how. How can art be so fascistly( yeah, I made up a word…) controlled by what they of the past have done? Isn’t art supposed to be pure creativity? I say yes. Graffiti, excluding the so emasculated marking of territory by gangs, has a beauty untapped by conventional medium. No lettering is alike. No character is alike. It is words transformed. It is nothing created into something. But that is not all. Consider the artist. Risking his/her safety and freedom in the pursuit of artistic expression is the most beautiful thing in the world to me. And it may be covered up in a day! The sheer drive and passion is what makes it a wonderful sight to behold, if nothing else. I have to say, for all you punks out there, there are rules that set taggers apart from artists. You must have respect for your fellow man, but fuck “The Man.” Abridged, It means that you will never, ever hit private property or independent establishments unless otherwise stated by the a fore mentioned, you will do the best you can to establish “flow” in your piece to make it appealing rather than an eyesore, and lastly, you will practice on paper more than walls. Thank you for reading. / —SHME32

Prosecution admits presence of cluster bombs at USAF Lakenheath (Suffolk, England). Expert witness Rae McGrath (International Spokesperson on Cluster Munitions for the Handicap International Network) to give evidence tomorrow. On Monday 1st December 10 am, the Lakenheath 8 began their trial on charges of SOCPA 128 and Criminal Damage. Wreaths were laid at the door of Ipswich crown court in remembrance of Margaret Moss, one of the defendants who sadly died in 2007, and for all the victims of cluster munitions. So far the court has listened to the prosecution and 6 witnesses, including Mrs.Rice, deputy director of Air Staff, responsible for all policy matters relating to United States visiting forces, Sgt. Thomas, USAF Technical Munitions Specialist from USAF Lakenheath, two MOD police officers and one MOD CID officer. The court also heard two admissions one from the defendants saying they admit to cutting the fence, entering what has been designated a SOCPA ( Serious Organised Crime Act) area and locking themselves to a technical munitions area. And the US air force admitted that USAF Lakenheath houses cluster bombs and that these munitions were present on the 2nd October 2006 when the Lakenheath 8 took the action to stop the loading of cluster bombs they believed were to be taken to Iraq. Tomorrow, 3rd of October while over 100 governments gather in Oslo to sign the convention on cluster munitions the seven defendants will return to court to hear the expert evidence of Rae McGrath, International Spokesperson on Cluster Munitions for the Handicap International Network, and the lakenheath 8’s evidence. The trial is expected to take 4 days. from

My friends got found guilty of a reduced charge of ‘airbase trespass’ and were given 12-month conditional discharges with costs of £250 to be paid by each defendant. More Interestingly the Crown (Federal Prosecutor) decided not to push for SOCPA convictions. The SOCPA law effectively treats demonstrations in certain places as ‘serious organised crimes’ akin to terrorism. Again, we see that protesters get charged (as I myself did on a similar action against the US Military regarding cluster bombs being shipped through UK civilian aiports) but not the war criminals who were moving illegal munitions and carrying out war crimes from British soil (the bombing of civilians in Iraq & Afghanistan).. This country is now just a rat run for war criminal scumbags (a.k.a. the Pentagon and the IDF/IAF); where companies like Raytheon can profit off the killing of children and BAE Systems & Saudi can kill a criminal prosecution dead in the water. How much has really changed in European culture in the last 200 years??? The rich still operate above the law, countries still openly flout treaties and the lives of the poor are still deemed less valuable than land.

Israeli conduct in an already illegal slaughter of civilians gets sicker and sicker. Not content with its usual practice of breaking International Law and bombing medical facilities and targeting medical vehicles… ‘Since fighting began in the Gaza Strip, PHR-Israel has received 6 reports of Israeli Air Force attacks on medical insfrustructure and personnel. On Thursday, January 1, PHR-Israel responded by appealing to the Minister of Defense to open an investigatation into the reported instances .’ Israel is now refusing to treat civilian casualties without promise of payment up front! ‘On Monday, December 29th, an ambulance carrying a young Gazan man 16 years old, wounded in the air attacks, reached Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv. Only one person succeeded in gaining entry into Israel, despite information from COGAT the that 11 patients were granted authorization to leave the Strip. The youth was injured at the UNRWA school and it was found that he was permitted to exit only after UNRWA agreed to shoulder the costs of his medical care. PHR-Israel has learned, after a thorough inquiry into the matter that wounded persons are not referred to Israeli hospitals due to the decision by the Palestinian Referrals Office in Ramallah that they will not cover the cost of hospitalization in Israel for many reasons, primarily because it regards Israel as responsible for the direct wounds inflicted on the individuals. ‘ / __ Thanks to Blamo for the links!

As some of you may know, I went to the Navy Dare Bombing Range Open House again this year, and it was quite good again. It gives a good insight on what our military personell does to prepare for whatever mission lay ahead. Saw multiple US Navy aircraft conduct ground strafing runs as well as bomb runs on a mock city. Michael Mann in the tower was able to entice some of the pilots to give us a panel check (i.e close flyby while slightly banked). This usually results in some great photo opps. To see a quick slideshow of the shennanigans at Navy Dare, / Check here / Just adjust the number of secs for the images and push the Play button.
