World Leadership – Where is the balance? / State of political global affairs…….not so good…..can injecting more female energy into politics be a good thing – in order to include some left / right brain thinking? / Some thoughts…. / …………………………………………………………………………………….. / I think it’s impossible as a Social Worker, for me to ignore politics despite the fact that the health and general well-being of the individual is where I concentrate my efforts and work on a daily basis. Alongside this, I feel strongly about democracy and human rights for all people from all countries – without prejudice and without bias. / Politically and on a global scale, I wish more women were responsible for making global decisions! Not because men are incapable of doing it well – historically the world has certainly seen great male leaders. However, in the world in which we live today – I don’t know where they’re hiding! Too much is going too wrong. Which brings me to the point I’m raising….Would it be a good thing if there were more women at the top of the global political ladder? Why aren’t more women making global strategic plans for the present and future generations of this planet’s inhabitants? Or at least, and more to the point, why aren’t we considering incorporating more planet sustaining plans into the fray? I believe the benefits of incorporating more female oriented thinking into world politics is that women may tend to think and respond more from a ‘gatherers’ point of view as well as a ‘hunters’ helping to perhaps balance these. A more balanced approach in thinking about resources and where they are heading and how to preserve and proliferate rather than destroy and hit targets has got to have its benefits! My question is:- If increasing more balance(via introducing more women into this situation) offers a possibility to do things differently and with less violence – ‘Could this assist in achieving more balanced, logical and humanitarian approaches into the ‘global thinking tank’ with desirable outcomes and consequences? / In the animal kingdom, and even in ‘fight or flight’ situations, in human life, these reflex reactions and responses are essential to preserve life in high risk situations. The problem though, appears for me, when these reactions and responses which are also creating the direction of our planet’s future (and all that dwell on it), cannot be the adopted modus operandi !! – We need to start thinking and operating differently across the world – our old methods are not working. Violence has never worked as a tool for resolving dispute. It would appear that much of this retaliation mentality and ‘driven-ness’ we’re seeing all around us in the world today, may be fuelled by the compulsion for domination. A bit like The Biggest Strongest /Most intimidating leader of the pack! mentality – a recipe for extreme danger! We are mainly, at the end of the day human beings who want to live a good and productive life – regardless of what our ethnicity or country of origin is. All people have an essential right to live a safe, free and productive and happy life. Freedom should not be something anybody has the power to give or to take away from anybody. Protection as part of safety is different than planned attacks of destruction or war – none of these tactics will ever bring peace! There is no such thing as a winnable war – loss is inevitable – and a winnable war is an oxymoron – a tragic and costly one! / Instead of counting the expenses of arms I wonder how many bodies we could match for each dollar / pound / whatever currency we use….and see where the largest expense is. I take the risk and speak not only for myself and say that I reckon….most of us don’t want to be part of this primordial pack – of backward thinking destruction with no winners in sight anywhere. We will all be losers until we start to see, as a species on this planet, that aggression is not the right answer to settling dispute. Women have their weaknesses too – however, ..I can’t see women planning destruction as a solution to any dispute – seriously speaking.(There will be exceptions but generally it’s not the female versus the male here – just the mental orientation towards problem solving I’m debating). Some broad minded and more liberated countries in Europe enjoy some of the benefits of neutrality from war – thankfully for them! And thanks to their political leaders who share and adopt more balanced views of life and tolerance. These views and principles incorporate a more balanced approach. The result is a more productive and harmonious society which is more caring and safe. And has long-term interests in preserving and promoting sustainable life in its strategic planning. It’s true that not all women are nurturers and some are even murderers however, by and large, women (who are suitably qualified), would appear to possess the capacity for nurturing and leadership – simultaneously. Could their absence from the key decision making processes, be a missing ingredient in world leadership causing a huge imbalance? It makes me both sad and angry that leaders are allowed to go above international law and disregard instructions from United Nations – namely pleas to cease fire or to withdraw and stop attacks on vulnerable countries. Where oh where is democracy? This behaviour is carried out regardless of the fact that there are majorities of people in these leaders’ democratic…?...countries protesting against and outnumbering those that agree with their decisions….What a sad day it is for democracy (or the theory of it anyway??) Sometimes I think about gathering many of the current global decision-making leaders – (and their female cohorts if they are as equally powerful and pro-war and supporting destruction) – and giving them each a toy gun and locking them up in a room where they can pretend to blow off each others’ heads and have fights and vent their aggression and madness around….SAFELY !!! / (And this includes people from *all parts of the world – not one country in particular – I want to make that very very clear!) / A long time later (perhaps)..then let them return to the real world where guns, bombs, armies and war are not allowed!! – EVER! After more balanced-minded decisions have been made and plans set in motion to disarm and abandon war and all that comes with it. Perhaps this is too much to expect of our human race – but wouldn’t it be great if we could look at history and stop repeating mistakes! ASIDE: – Please note – I absolutely love men and enjoy good relationships with them as colleagues, family, friends and lovers! Especially those that are balanced, strong minded, valuing the balance a woman projects into the mix and have the foresight to envision a world ’ sans frontiers’ – where peace is possible because of their actions – and – where they recognize ways to use not abuse their positions of power and facilitate improvements and positive change for this planet and its current and future inhabitants! / ...................................................................................................................................................... / On Feminism Feminism – Is a broad term which does not refer to a single unified movement and is used to cover a great variety of political and social campaigns and ideals. The issue of rights for women became prominent during the French and American revolutions in the late 18th century; Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman was published in 1792. In Britain, however, it was not until the emergence of the suffragette movement in the late 19th century that there was significant political change, women finally gaining the vote in 1918. The ‘second wave’ of feminism that arose during the 1960s in Europe and North America formed part of the widespread social changes and political protests of that era; in general, the idea of ‘unity’ or ‘sisterhood’ was considered more important than issues (such as ethnicity and class) which could divide women. Seminal figures included Simone de Beauvoir, Betty Friedan, and Germaine Greer. During the 1970s and 1980s the movement became more fragmented and critical of the ideals of unity expressed in the 1960s: a division arose between mainstream or socialist feminists, interested in working to improve the position of women in society as it is, and radical feminists, who felt that any interaction with men tended to result in exploitation or violence. In recent years Intellectual Feminism, associated with Psychoanalysis and Deconstruction, has come to prominence, particularly in France; there has always been something of a backlash against feminism and the hailing by some of a post-feminist age. I guess the bottom line is – if world leadership lacks balance – can gender-balanced thinking – incorporating Intellectual Feminism help us to find better ways to de-construct and re-construct and employ positive ways to find solutions to resolve disputes on our precious planet? What do others think? © Copyright – Suzanne German – 2007 Moderator / Poetry & Prose – Questions & Meanings Group

This is one piece of Newfoundland History which is a little more unusual then the rest. The story of the Bell Island Explosion has always facinated me, so I thought I’d share it with everyone here on the bubble. / Bell island From Wikipedia: / On April 2, 1978, there was a loud explosion on Bell Island that caused damage to some houses and the electrical wires in the surrounding area. Two cup-shaped holes about two feet deep and three feet wide marked the major impact. A number of TV sets in Lance Cove, the surrounding community, also exploded at the time of the blast. Weather men confirmed that atmospheric conditions at the time were not conducive to lightning. The blast was heard 45 kilometers away in Cape Broyle. Apparently U.S. Vela satellites picked up the event. The incident was investigated promptly by two representatives from a U.S. weapons laboratory at Los Alamos, according to the news media.(1) It has been speculated that the explosion was ball lightning. However, a recent documentary aired on The History Channel about electromagnetic pulse weapons speculated that it may have been a result of top secret experiments by either the Russian or U.S. governments, involving high energy beams focused into the ionosphere that where attracted by the iron in abandoned mines. From The History Channel: / On a calm Sunday morning in 1978, residents of Bell Island, Newfoundland hear an odd, high-pitched hum, immediately followed by a sudden and terrifying blast resounding for hundreds of miles. Witnesses observe a “straight shaft of light” descending from the sky, and a barrage of violent electrical phenomenon. Outbuildings are destroyed, livestock electrocuted, televisions explode and power lines vaporize. Observed from space, the light emissions from the “boom” are more powerful than those of the Hiroshima blast. The Invisible Machine unravels the mystery of the Bell Island “boom” and in doing so takes a chilling look at the U.S. military’s experimentation with electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons,”e-bombs”, directed energy weapons that can destroy electrical and communications systems but leave people seemingly unharmed. We interview eye witnesses, an EMP weapons designer, scientists, journalists, policy makers and activists who warn that these weapons are real and may have been used by the US military during its “shock and awe” campaign against Iraq in 2003. While the United States continues to develop and experiment with these weapons of mass destruction, the questions remain: were the bizarre events on Bell Island in 1978 related to early testing gone wrong and were directed EMP weapons at Baghdad’s electricity generation plant the most recent experiment? If so, what are the consequences of unleashing this powerful force? The Invisible Machine pulls back the veils of secrecy to find the answers. / Photo by Kevin Kroeker

The trilogy Love Bombed, Me and Amsterdam and Love Bombed in Amsterdam combined reached 1000 views today. Two of these works are collaborations with Vasile Stan. The combined numbers for the three works is 1001 views, 193 Comments and 41 favourites. I would like to thank all my redbubble friends for their views and support of these three works. I have always loved the idea of working collaboratively with another artist and looking at life and art through different lens and from different perspectives. Each perspective, whether subtle or powerful offers a fresh way of seeing. Collaborating with Vasile in Love Bombed in Amsterdam and Me in Amsterdam, Vasile has taken my original painting of Love Bombed and a photo self portrait and changed them both into a new story, a new vision. I would like to say a special thank you to Vasile for his artistic eye and his exciting vision. Just felt excited reaching this combined milestone and wanted to say thank you to all my friends on RedBubble who have offered their fresh view and perspective on these three works. Anthea

My dad has been on my mind lately. Two weeks ago when my daughter was home, she was asking me all sorts of questions about him and researching his war record. She’s an aspiring writer and is usuing him as a character in a piece that she’s working on. He’s been dead for 12 years this September. My father was may things. He was a small town lawyer, an almost orphan, an alcoholic, a farm boy. I was his favorite and never knew why until a few months before his death. My youngest niece and her then fiance were making the obligatory meet the grandparents trip to my hometown in Kansas. My niece’s fiance, a history teacher, was asking my dad about his World War Two experiences. We had known that he was in the Air Force and in the Pacific. We knew that he had wanted to be a pilot but wasn’t allowed to fly because of color blindness. That was probably a lucky thing for the war effort, if his later skill at driving a car was any indication of his talent for flying planes. What he had told no one, until that conversation with Bob, was that he was on one of the planes that accompanied the Enola Gay to Hiroshima. Lawyers during the war either went into JAG or intelligence. My dad was a sort of spy! After his return from the war, he told my mother that he didn’t want any more children. Sworn to secrecy about his war experiences, he had periods of depression. He drank too much during these times. Not much was known about radiation during the 1950s. I think that he was probably certain that he was dying of radiation poisoning and that I would be born horribly deformed. When I came out healthy, it was probably the biggest relief of his life. My birth is a text book example of the bonding that goes on between parent and child. He didn’t see my sister until she was two. He was sent overseas just as she was born. When I was born, he was home and helped my mother with all of the new baby work. By the time my brother was born, he was over his worry that he would cause a child to be born maimed. I wish we had all known of this sooner. I grew up with so many questions about my birth and childhood. Nothing in my parents marriage made any sense to me. With this bit of information everything fell into place. I became a real adult at the age of 45.

I found an interesting work of art at an Ann Arbor yard sale. Took me two years to figure out the creator of that pencil and ink piece: Maude McVeigh Hutchins (4 Mai 46). Maude Hutchins made her name as an artist during the 20s, 30s, & 40s. Around 1950, Maude Hutchins began a successful career as a novelist. Her themes generally regarded sexual awakening. Maude Hutchins died in 1992 aged 102. Her novels are enjoying resurgent popularity. Before 1948, Maude Hutchins had been married to lawyer Robert Maynard Hutchins for 27 years. At age 30, in 1929, Robert M. Hutchins became the youngest president ever (still) of a major American university: U of Chicago. R.M. Hutchins remained in that capacity for 21 years before becoming the director of the Ford Foundation. He initiated educational reforms, many adopted by other institutions. Hutchins (who probably could have been president) was a pacifist who ironically became the principle contractor ($400 millions worth) in the creation of the first atomic bombs; he was the only civilian outside the Pentagon that officially knew about the Manhattan Project. You may recall that the first sustained chain reaction (Enrico Fermi 1942) was initiated under the abandoned U of C football stadium. Hutchins’ U of C contracts also included operation of the Oak Ridge, TN plutonium factory (WWII). After Hiroshima, Hutchins spent the remainder of his life opposing the arms race (died 1977). My fascination with Hutchins springs from his secular philosophical view of morality. From the time of his appointment as the Dean of the Yale Law School onward (mid 20s), he grappled with society’s need for moral education. Hutchins’ pointed out that the scientific method does not give us the knowledge or wisdom for how to manage science; it is something only a moral education can achieve. Nearly all of his efforts to inculcate morality into academics (outside theological schools), and later into corporate thinking, failed. I find Hutchins philosophical view interesting because I understand that a person’s moral view is a much higher standard than one’s minimum legal responsibility; and I can see that living merely to a minimum legal responsibility will not sustain the fabric of society— yet it is the trend. The problem for morality is that it is like both gravity and the very essence of life: we all know that it exists, but none have yet quantified it scientifically.

A new agreement banning the manufacture and use of Cluster Bombs was signed by over 100 Nations, in Ireland this week. Although Australia is a signatory to the agreement, it has an exemption to partake in joint exersises with nations that haven’t signed. Australia can still use the new “Smart’ cluster bombs it has just purchased. / The United States of America did not sign the agreement….... Laos, was bombed during the Vietnam war with more bombs than were dropped in the entire Second World War. Many of them Cluster Bombs. War was never declared on Laos. Laos still suffers the death and maiming of men, women and children from the millions of unexploded bombs that were droped over 33 years ago. Laos is not the only Nation that still suffers from bombs dropped in wars long over. One of the agreements is that nations that have dropped these horrible weapons, will have to pay for their removal. Is this the reason why the USA and others have refused to sign the agreement ? Horrible and totaly Evil…......................
