Taken in South Australia in 2006, the lightning storm was natures most beautiful yet deadly show. The experience was priceless.
Lightning strike
Yet another storm image from the tornadic Limbscomb storm this year, but this was just before sunset when the shelf was pushing east towards the Oklahoma state line. Lucky lightning in this one. This shot was taken at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, CO. The most amazing electrical storm came through. It was quite a ways in the distance. The cloud coverage was interesting which sat low over our heads. Lightning flashed about every three seconds. It was truly spectacular. It never rained where I was standing. Noise Reduction software applied due to the high ISO setting. I put the camera on a tripod and kept clicking. The pool house was in the foreground and Cheyenne Mountain in the background.
Lightning striking in the mountains behind a home in the Arizona desert.
Huge lightning bolt striking in Cave Creek, Arizona.
Another shot i was lucky enough to capture before the rain hit. Taken in outback Australia, South West Queensland.
This storm developed in the evening, and produced several spectacular displays of lightning, such as this bolt of lightning, that landed quite a distance from the rain area. The clouds are lit and coloured by three light sources: the lightning, both inside and outside, the blue glow of the late twilight in the west, and the orange light of the city of Lutz, Florida. /
Captured in Cave Creek, Arizona, this was at the end of a short but powerful storm. The lightning was much too close, couldn’t stand with the tripod, just ran to it between strikes. Didn’t get too many keepers that night, but was happy with this one. Wish I had a better foreground, but sometimes you have to take what you can get. / / Other lightning shots: / / / /
Captured in Cave Creek, Arizona. Really liked the colors of the sky in this shot. / Other lightning photos: / / / /
During a severe storm in Santa Maria, California, USA. Twin downstrokes and one of the last shots I took that evening. I was ecstatic to see this shot come off of my camera. This photograph has put me on the map and is one of my best sellers. This was taken with a 30 second exposure set to f/22 at 24mm. There is a t-shirt available also under “clothing”.
Captured in Cave Creek, Arizona. Canon 20D. / Thanks for looking. Other lightning photos: / / /

Part of the Sea Storm series shot off Bundeena Cliffs Royal National Park just south of Sydney. / The blur of the clouds is their movement over the 30 second exposure – more clouds start sweeping in as the storm gathers greater momentum. / This shot fits between this one and this one
An afternoon thunder storm passes over Brisbane. / Composed from several long exposures, during a six minute period. Worth the click to Large – many more stars await you. Fourth in the Sea Storm series shot off Bundeena Cliffs Royal National Park just south of Sydney. It was quite a sight watching the storm gather momentum under this brilliant starlit sky. This shot is actually the third in the sequence and comes between this one and this one Canon 30D / Tv: 20secs / Av: f/3.5 / ISO: 800
its a zigzag!!!
At last! We’ve had four brilliant storms through here in the last few weeks and I’ve missed each of them. Man these have been tricky buggers – short, very violent, straight overhead – and I’ve miss-timed them each time. The problem has been go out too early and the gear gets soaked and you can’t photograph anyway because of the rain. Leave it a few minutes tool late and that’s it – show’s over folks. / Three times I’ve gone tearing out as the rain eases off with huge, spectacular bolts going off all around and then when I get the tripod out EACH TIME (I kid you not) the moment the camera has gone on the tripod that’s it – the bolts stop dead. I have been teased mercilessly! But this time – gotcha! / This is a single exposure. Two bolts on either side and one overhead – doorway or what!! / And to get an idea of the scale of these bolts those lights off to the left are perched on top of 100m cliffs. And the reddish clouds on the left are reflecting the light from Sydney which is just out of shot. / Taken on the track to Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park, Sydney Australia Canon 1Ds MkIII / Tv: 30secs / Av: f/5.0 / ISO: 200 / FL: 45mm
The lightning to me looks like a stylised dragon gazing covetously over its hoard of gold – hm, wonder what was in that coffee. Taken a few minutes before Light Arch The lights are Sydney from the CBD to the eastern suburbs and then south. Canon 1Ds MkIII / Tv: 30secs / Av: f/5 / ISO: 200 / FL: 55mm but then pano cropped
