According to tradition, Sestri Levante was founded by the Ligurian tribe of the “Tigullii” and it was already known in the Roman Age under the name “Segesta Tigulliorum”. The ancient core of the town developed in the Middle Ages in a fortified position on the “island”. After the 15th century, the town expanded onto the alluvial plain south of the Gromolo river. Sestri Levante then became part of the Fieschi family’s domain, until it passed under the flags of the Republic of Genoa, which built the castle on the “island” and kept control of the town until the Napoleonic conquest.

Built 1930-31, Royal Shipyard (formerly), Castellamare di Stabia. and carried out many voyages before World War II. The period of the war was the only time the ship has not been active. The elegant, three-mated full rigger serves as the training vessel of the Italian Naval Academy.The entire rig and all the sheets are traditional materials: Canvas sails and hemp ropes. The only synthetic on board is the mooring lines, which have to be an approved type for some of the ports they visit. The sheets, laid end to end, span 35 km. This shot was so cool… cause the capt let me shoot while the boat was nearly on it side like a catamaran.. it was so compelling to be almost thrown over.. I kid you not.. the best for me is the mystery.. / will I survive.. ??? Camera stratagy.. I had a plan to toss it to someone as I may have slipped in.. tee hee.. all kinds of adrenalin .. goings on.. / Hope he likes it.. this and the a few other close ups of crew.. I am so happy with. This is my first video clip, and I do hope you cast a blindeye to its failings, and enjoy the lovely vocals and mood set by Marilyn Scott. All the photos are my own, taken here along our wonderful Hobsons Bay foreshore, just outside our front door, most of them last night.
