a severe storm looms heavily over the tranquil waters of Tin Can Bay in Qld. Black and white look at Sydney landmark
Be thou the rainbow in the storms of life. The evening beam that smiles the clouds away, and tints tomorrow with prophetic ray. / / Lord Byron (1788-1824)
Sailboat cruising in the light of the silvery moon.
I was reminded of this poem: ‘The Lady of Shalott’ On either side the river lie / Long fields of barley and of rye, / That clothe the wold and meet the sky; / And thro’ the field the road runs by / To many-tower’d Camelot; / And up and down the people go, / Gazing where the lilies blow / Round an island there below, / The island of Shalott. I stand, I stare / I wonder, where? I pray, I breathe / to stay, or leave? I live, I lie / I wonder, why? I love, I pain / I feel the same. I give, I get / and yet, and yet? Shot on Werneth Low, Hyde. Overlooking Manchester City Centre
In modern English, the term ghost ship has come to stand for at least one of three separate definitions, all of which involving unexplained circumstances. Historically, the term has been used to refer to reported sightings of apparitions over water that have appeared in the form of maritime sailing ships, often after having previously been known to have sunk, or to derelict vessels found floating with no crew. In fiction, ghost ships have often been vessels crewed by some manner of spectral beings. Full Moons are traditionally associated with temporal insomnia, insanity and various magical phenomena such as lycanthropy. Psychologists, however, have found that there is no strong evidence for effects on human behavior around the time of a full moon. They find that studies are generally not consistent, with some showing a positive effect and others showing a negative effect (hence the terms lunacy and lunatic) Many neopagans hold a monthly ritual called an Esbat at each full moon, while some people practicing traditional Chinese religions prepare their ritual offerings to their ancestors and deities on every full and new moon
it used to be that magnificent leviathans / glided across the ocean filled with the gifted and gilded. / they were floating palaces, each one more regal and luxurious than the last. / sooner or later it was all doomed to end; / airlines made intercontinental travel much faster and more affordable / and as it did, one by one the luxury liners from the golden era / passed into oblivion – they are all now at the ocean’s murky bottom / or were scrapped long ago. and thus an age ended, / with only one remnant left. / she sits now in the harbor, her insides gutted and her luster faded, / as though waiting for the crowds to come back, / patiently, for she remembers the laughter, the tinkling wine glasses and toasts. / she was magnificent, full of music and spectacle, / and her pride in this is still evident / even if the new generations have forgotten her. / time has not diminished her poise and dignity / she was the fastest cruise ship ever built and / a hundred feet longer than the titanic. / so look upon her now, while you can. / she is the last of her kind. / -—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— more of my work is available on my website, www.abandonedamerica.org

for Now here’s my darkside “My Darkside” seeks to explore issues of identity and meaning and the questioning of one’s life and purpose over time and beyond time. There is deliberate loneliness and isolation as the viewer is invited to journey in the small boat in the moonlight of her face. The only light that the moon has to offer is a reflection of the sun, other than that it is nothing but a cold dark stone. Acrylic and Mixed Media on Canvas / February 2009 / 92cm x 92cm

This is the second version of the image that I submitted four days ago. As I mentioned in the description of version #1, there were chances that I would still want to improve on it. Well I was not really satisfied with it and gave it another go. The long crossing through adolescence and into adulthood is not always an easy one. For many young people, it often seems like a neverending path, flooded with tears, a river of dark and murky waters ... The model in this shot is Abi, my RB friend Shelly’s beautiful daughter who is 15. She was photographed by her very talented mom Work uploaded for a challenge in the Collaborations group. The challenge consisted in using one or both of the two / images on the left as a starting point to create something / new. monocotylidono Shelly Hiebert / I chose to use both images, but also to add a 3rd collaborator. Vikram Franklin has kindly accepted to let me use this photo of a boat, and I used a bit of sky to improve on the new version as well. / I also added some textures of my own, as described below: This bit of agitated water was used mostly over the path. I simply copied part of the water from the image below into a new document and distorted the perspective a bit. One of my bad shots of a river. Nice to recycle into a texture! / Here is another photo of mine used as a texture: I use this photo of the St-Lawrence river in the fog very often in my composites. This time, it was used in at least 7 layers with various blending modes and opacities. I thought that the sky needed something and a crying moon was ideal. I used a photo of Jade, my 14-year old niece, added tears of blood and spherized it to create a moon. Played with the sky and shifted the thinning clouds to place the moon in a better position. Finally, I added a sheer layer of moon glow. featured in the ALL ABOUT BOATING group October 22nd, 2009 As the storm was rolling in at Lough Mask, this little boat was lit beautifully by a small opening in the clouds. Lucky me for being at the right spot! Picture taken at Lough Mask, co. Mayo, Ireland PP: Contrast and a bit of burn and dodge.
