The sea both serene and deadly. Dealt this day trawler a killing blow a few years ago. The corpse of the boat is slowly decaying and being sucked into the sea, all that is left today is the bleached ribs of the carcass lying in the shallows where the sea threw it.

A revised version of my ‘Middlesbrough Drops’ watercolour painting. The coal drops on the river Tees estuary, in the 1830’s. / In the foreground, is the Tees river ferry – which in those days, was a small, rowing boat. I love the daunting and weird, distant grey structures, ready to drop the coal upon the collier (coal) ships. My version of a Thomas Harrison Hair, 1837 watercolour. Watercolour and HB pencil.

Went out with fellow bubbler David Parkin to the Lakes today, what a smashing bloke he is !! / Any way we had a ball in the sunshine and beautiful surroundings even if i did get lost once or lots of times !!!

Painted from an 1880’s photo, of the fishing port of Whitby on the North East coast of England. Here, laid up, is the collier brig, ‘Opal’. The ruins of the priory, immortalised by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, can be seen on the hill. My first pen and watercolour work. Watercolour washes over a pencil drawing, then finished in ink. Hannemuhle, 200lb paper 7”x 8”.

The North Sea at Whitby. The Herring boats at misty dawn, / To get the details of the boats correct, I’ve used a Victorian photo as the subject. I liked the very hard pen ink lines of the foreground, contrasting with the soft, misty, wet-in-wet background. 90 lb watercolour, medium rough paper. / 12”x8”

Taken from my wonderful book of North East sailing ships on the coast. / And the ship, background and quay, are painted from the fenland port of Wisbech, on the Lincolnshire coast. The rest of the painting is from my imagination. Watercolour on two rivers, hand-made 140lb paper. / 14” x 21”

The Crawley Edge Boatshed on the Swan River, One of the most iconic landmarks in Perth. The Boatshed is believed to have been built in the 1930’s. Taken with my 5DMkII and 24-105 f/4 ISO 100, 30 second exposure. When I am an old horsewoman / I shall wear turquoise and diamonds, / And a straw hat that doesn’t suit me / And I shall spend my social security on / white wine and carrots, / And sit in my alleyway of my barn / And listen to my horses breathe. I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night / And ride the old bay gelding, / Across the moonstruck meadow / If my old bones will allow / And when people come to call, I will smile and nod / As I walk past the gardens to the barn / and show instead the flowers growing / inside stalls fresh-lined with straw. If you can brave the winter sunrise, and I don’t often enough, they are definately the most colourful. (Who am I kidding, I was in a T-shirt and shorts for this, it wasn’t even cold!!). This one over the Noosa River, Noosaville. Yes that is my favorite boat model, and this little duck sat there nice and still for me. I think they call them wood ducks, and he was like wood, hardly moved.. Wasn’t lucky enough to catch any of the bird life this morning, and I just missed a shot with a Whistling Kite eagle flying overhead.. Bugger!! by dinghysailor1The view to march wood in a torrential downpour one August evening at St Mary’s Loch in the lovely scottish borders.
