Corio Bay, Eastern Beach – Geelong. / I had me some time to stop for a few quick shots on the way to work this morning. Lucky to have such a clean surface on the water, the wind really chopped it up by this arvo. / I was particularly drawn by the criss-crossing of the wires and how they reflected on the water. For the record, it’s a HDR comp.
Lakes entrance is a fishing port and tourist town located on the Southeastern coast of Victoria, Australia. It is near a natual channel which connects the Gippsland Lakes to Bass Straight. The town has been a popular holiday destination for generations of Victorians, yet has managed to retain its smalltown rural charm. Surfing on the nearby Ninety Mile Beach is a popular attraction, as is fishing from the many piers and bridges in the area. Family entertainment such as minigolf and the popular Shell Museum cater to all ages. This sunset was truly one of the most magnificent I’ve ever seen. Everyone in the town stopped to watch the spectacle and I shot many dozens of photos, trying to capture the glorious warm golden light that flooded the river. This is also my most successful attempt at a High Dynamic Range photo. I took three exposures at different settings to try and capture a broader range of detail in the highlights and shadows, and manually merged them together in photoshop.

This is the third and last in the series. / Royal Marines. / The first home of the Royal Marines in Kent was established at Chatham in 1755. Because of its proximity to the continent and the fact that it possessed a thriving naval dockyard, Deal has been closely associated with the corps ever since its foundation. Records from the old Navy yard at Deal exist from 1658 and show that Marines from Chatham and Woolwich were on duty in Deal, and quartered in the town, until the Deal depot was established in 1861. Deal Barracks has become known over its long history as the Royal Marine School of Music, the barracks at Walmer consisting of the North, East and South (or Cavalry) barracks, and all were constructed shortly after the outbreak of the French revolution. Part of the South barracks was used from 1815 as the quarters for the ‘blockade men’, drafted against a threat of local smuggling. The South barracks became a coastguard station thereafter, and this duty continued until 1840. It was the East barracks which accommodated the School of Music, until the Royal Naval School of Music was formed at Plymouth in 1903, but which moved to Deal in 1930, replacing the original depot band formed in 1891. Thus the institution became known as the Royal Marine School of Music in 1950. During 1940, at St. Margaret’s Bay, close to Deal, the Royal Marines Siege Regiment came into being and manned cross-channel guns for most of the remainder of the war. At approximately 8.20am on the 22nd of September 1989, the Royal Marines School of Music was bombed by the IRA, this resulted in the death of 11 bandsmen including musician Robert Simmonds and the injury of 22 other marines. The memorial garden is situated in the grounds of the old barracks where the bomb went off. This was built in remembrance of the 11 that died and was then restored after an arson attack a number of years ago. Every year the families and friends of those that died join together at the garden to pay their respects and lay flowers in a memorial service. On the evening of March 26, 1996, the Deal populace were privy to a special ceremony, the ‘beating of the retreat’, coming from the South barracks, as the Marines were commanded to vacate their ancient Kent depot and move to new quarters at Portsmouth. The Marines every year come up to the bandstand and put on a display which attracts well over 4000 people. / I am very proud to say that my youngest son was a Royal Marine Commando for eight years. / Thank you for looking.
Some patches of lighter paint / metal on the side of an old boat – after rain with early morning light. I have been working on making a series of abstract images from boats at a local boatyard in Maylands where old boats in dry dock are brought back to life.

Three seagulls having a leisurely chat at Mornington late in the afternoon. This was the first time I had been to Mornington since I was kid. I always flashbacks of a pier down on the coast as a child and until now had never realised where it was. According to tradition, Sestri Levante was founded by the Ligurian tribe of the “Tigullii” and it was already known in the Roman Age under the name “Segesta Tigulliorum”. The ancient core of the town developed in the Middle Ages in a fortified position on the “island”. After the 15th century, the town expanded onto the alluvial plain south of the Gromolo river. Sestri Levante then became part of the Fieschi family’s domain, until it passed under the flags of the Republic of Genoa, which built the castle on the “island” and kept control of the town until the Napoleonic conquest.

The ancient sailing boats are wharfed next to modern motor trawlers that still mark the rhythm of the Leonardesque Canal Harbour’s life and the old but still running fish market is just close to a modern wholesale Fish Market. The Canal Harbour is the main axis of the old town, the center of the society life where citizens and tourist have their walk. The Port can be also considered the main historic building of the town, as it follows the drawing of Leonardo who in 1502 was asked to improve the design of the former landing place. Besides the Marine Museum, along the Port you can also find the Antiquarium, Casa Moretti, Piazza Pisacane with a monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi and its solemn inscription, the old Fish Market and the wide Ciceruacchio square, where the perimeter of the old Pretorian Tower used in the past to defend the port against the Barbary pirates is still visible.Today, near the lighthouse, the imposing Vinci’s gates defend the town from sea storms: this is a real example of modern technology carried out basing on Leonardo’s drawings. The picturesque Piazzetta delle Conserve located in the middle of the old town is named after the structures dug in the ground where the fish was preserved with layers of snow and pressed ice for a long time before the invention of refrigerators. Four of these preserving structures, so numerous in the raised area called Il Monte (the mountain), have been recently restored and are well visible together with the upper part of another still underground preserving structure. Wawatam Lighthouse at the entrance to the Marina in St. Ignace in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It stands at the end of an old railroad dock which was once used to load railroad cars onto a ferry to transport them between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. The city of St. Ignace has renamed he lighthouse after the 338-foot Chief Wawatam rail car ferry. It rises 52 feet in the air at the end of a newly constructed Huron Boardwalk and serves as a sentinel to the city’s marina. The beacon projects 13.2 miles over Lake Huron and will serve as a navigational aid to boaters. This lighthouse was acquired from the Monroe Michigan Welcome Center in 2004, was moved to St. Ignace in five sections, and went operational on August 20th, 2006.
