Colourful houses stacked onto the hillside around Brixham harbour in Torbay, South Devon, with the setting sun perfectly complimenting the illuminated shopfronts on the harbourside. Painted from an 1880’s photo, of the fishing port of Whitby on the North East coast of England. Here, laid up, is the collier brig, ‘Opal’. The ruins of the priory, immortalised by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, can be seen on the hill. My first pen and watercolour work. Watercolour washes over a pencil drawing, then finished in ink. Hannemuhle, 200lb paper 7”x 8”.

Inspired by Joseph Turner. Lindisfarne Priory and Castle, In Northumberland, (near where I live), as a storm rolls in, from the ever-moody, North Sea! Watercolour on 90lb paper 12”x 8” I loved painting this, and will do a much larger one, in the future.

When I think of Cornwall, my mind is never far from the many old unspoilt fishing villages dotted round it’s rugged coastline. As with Polperro on the South coast, it’s narrow streets are of cobbled construction and too narrow for cars, so it’s sleepy atmosphere is the perfect way to get away from the stress of modern city life. Late afternoon light.

I went over to my former home town of Totnes in South Devon UK.,this morning having checked that high tide was at 09,56 and all was still with the River Dart like a mirror and beautiful lateral warm light. A similar scene to my earlier Reflections of the Past image that was taken with my trusty old Nikon D100. Still getting accustomed to all the features on my recently purchased Nikon D300 but was more than pleased with the results of the images I took this morning, this one having little editing, just a slight perspective crop and a little sharpening. An eerie calm is enjoyed as the sun sinks down and at the end of a beautiful day and casts it’s golden hues on the River Teign in South Devon, UK.

Mevagissey is another of my favourite little Cornish Fishing villages, situated in St. Austell Bay on the South coast of the county. Still a thriving fishing port but over recent years it has become a popular holiday destination and quite a number of the old fisherma’s cottages around the harbour are now used as Summer holiday homes with a view of the harbour and bay. /

Well this one that settled on the bow of a small boat in front of me certainly seemed to be enjoying the peace and beauty of the moment as much as I was. An eerie atmosphere as the sun was setting on the River Teign in Devon UK., I am told that the geography of this part of the river gives most unusual colours during a sunset from yellow to golden bronze.

Taken from my wonderful book of North East sailing ships on the coast. / And the ship, background and quay, are painted from the fenland port of Wisbech, on the Lincolnshire coast. Another in the Masters series. / This is the centre part of a long panoramic watercolour. By Thomas Bush Hardy, 1895. I’ve moved some of the boats to be closer together, as my version is a small painting, 10×7 inches, on rough Bockingford tinted cream paper, 140lb. I will be painting the full length seascape in the future.

My version of a Thomas Bush Hardy (1842-97). From an 1895 watercolour of Ramsgate Harbour. A panoramic shaped painting, 23” x 10”. / Hand-made, 140lb rough paper. Over 20 hours work. Multiple layers of semi-transparent and opaque watercolour, and white zinc gouache for highlights. Viewing in larger size is necessary.

After I demonstrated a few wave painting techniques, I later thought to join them up into a painting! A Spontaneous watercolour! Watercolour 14” x 10” on Bockingford rough 140lb. So far, nobody has spotted the little men in white shirts, clinging for life, to the torn-off mast (left side of painting).

I never tire of visiting this beautiful old fishing harbour on Cornwall’s South coast, nothing seems to have changed there in the many years I’ve been visiting it, the old fishermen’s cottages surrounding the harbour are full of old world charm and the narrow cobbled streets are too narrow for cars, the perfect place to get away from the pressure of modern city and busy town life.
