  • What you are about to see is a true story, witnessed by a lot of waterbirds and my own photographic evidence. By our human social standards what happened may seem cruel and savage yet there must be some reason behind it all as that is the way Nature does things. / I was hesitant in using the title but there is no soft way to describe exatly what happened so if I have upset any sensibilities, I apologise. The action in the six parts was carried out in a large area of the pond with patches of light and shade so the exposure varies from image to image. I also kept the 7×11 format throughout the series as I may make a large display one day. Part 1: Calm Before the Storm / One nice day in late spring on the pond at The Binncale in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, this handsome pair of Anas domesticus (Pekin Ducks) was cruising around on the dark water amongst the blooming waterlilies, in peaceful harmony enjoying each other’s company in the mid-afternoon light. Part 2: The Pursuit / From around the little island in the pond, paddling faster and faster, came Monsieur Mallard, (Anas platyrhynchos), with lust in his eyes, in hot pursuit of Mrs Pekin, the obejct of hus carnal desire. Mr & Mrs Pekin paddled as fast as they could and did a lot of quacking but nothing deterred Monsieur Mallard Part 3: Consummation / Despite all of Mr Pekin’s concern and quacking, Monsieur Mallard being the larger and more dominating drake on the pond has his wicked way with Mrs Pekin who seems to be lucky enough to keep her head above water. Part 4: Afterglow / After carrying out his evil intent, Monsieur Mallard, feeling on a high, goes into a flap, feeling very euphoric. Part 5: Boasting / Monsieur Mallard then sets off around the pond quacking about his latest conquest like a real braggard. Part 6: Consolation / Mr Pekin stays by his wife’s side, consoling her after her terrible ordeal. Fuji S9600: f/4.9 @ 1/640sec, Manual Focus, hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3 for minimal tweaking. Visit the Aussie Birds collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more fine feathered quackers. Enjoy! DUCKS / (Click the links!) Rape at The Binnacle Part 1: Calm Before the Storm / Anas domesticus / Part 2: The Pursuit / Anas platyrhynchos & Anas domesticus / Part 3: Consummation / Anas platyrhynchos & Anas domesticus / Part 4: Afterglow / Anas platyrhynchos / Part 5: Boasting / Anas platyrhynchos / Part 6: Consolation / Anas domesticus / A Ducky Series Fly Donald, Fly! 1/4 / Well Excuuuuuse Me! 2/4 / All Together Now – One, Two Three! 3/4 / Fare Thee Well Ducky! 4/4 / Anas superciliosis / Anas castanea / Porphyrio porphyrio, Gallinula tenebrosa & Anas castanea /

  • Press Release (i.e. Boasting)
    by James Lillis

_Okay… I have to say that feel really uncomfortable blowing the proverbial ‘own horn’, but, hey, it’s a press release… what else am I…

Okay… I have to say that feel really uncomfortable blowing the proverbial ‘own horn’, but, hey, it’s a press release… what else am I meant to do? If you don’t like listening to shameless boasting, please move along…. :) For this MTV DECLARES CONTROVERSIAL AUSTRALIAN DESIGN BEST OF THE OBAMA PARODIES Shepard Faireys’ iconic hope poster spawned hundreds of parodies, but last week, the MTV blog named their pick for the best of them – ‘JOKE’ by Brisbane based designer James Lillis. Editor Casey Seijas said that of the countless riffs on the image, none could top the Australian designer’s contribution. The design features Heath Ledger’s disturbing portrait of the Joker in place of the election winner, and the word “JOKE’ replacing the word ‘HOPE’ The design has also proved a controversial one, with many Obama supporters feeling that it was a slur on the president elect. Mr Lillis stirred additional controversy in an interview with Wired magazine regarding the image when he stated “Democracy is overrated”. Mr Lillis later defended the image saying: “The picture is certainly not intended as a slur on Barack Obama – I really just wanted to capture the zeitgeist of 2008. I think that picture, and those two individuals really sum up – for me at least – the year 2008.” Regardless of the political overtones, the graphic has certainly been popular, with thousands of dollars worth of ‘JOKE’ tee shirts and posters being sold all over the world in the first two days. In His grace, that’s where I’ve learned to dwell…

God first had to help me un-learn a life time of negative experiences, before I could accept beyond any doubt my value to Him.

  • Amazing week
    by Denzil

I’ve just had a very interesting week – went to Darwin for just two half days and a night, for work, a couple of short meetings and a lot of time in a plane! I was lucky enough to have dinner at the waterfront, overlooking the harbour, with one of the most incredible sunsets you will see anywhere in the world. I noticed that midzing has also been in Darwin, same time I think, and I reckon we could have been standing next to each other when we took our shots of the sunset! I’m about to post a few (probably too many). The light was extraordinary, and the reflection of the molten sun in the wet sand at the water’s edge is something I have never seen before. My sojourn to Darwin was completely without drama or unpleasantness, unlike midzing’s! Then on the weekend, I went fishing off Moonta here in South Australia, on a charter boat with four friends. We went 14 nautical miles offshore, which means no sight of land AT ALL, no idea which way is what, relying on the skill of the crew and the GPS. It was a beautiful day, light breeze, about 25 degrees, a big swell but no chop. We saw so many dolphins that you could be forgiven for thinking that there must be millions of them out there. We threw back the undersize snapper, and the dolphins would dive down to catch them under the surface, and then breach with the fish in their mouths, as if to say ‘thank you’. The first time we thought it had to be just a coincidence, but it happened five or six times. Impossible to photograph with my camera, as the shutter lag is too long. But I have the visual memory! They would swim alongside the boat, rolling onto their sides so that their eye was uppermost, looking straight at us. I caught 2 incredibly large fish, the first one weighed 5 kilos after it had been gutted… I have named him Walter, after the last carp I caught and killed from my dam. I hope my fishing exploits don’t offend the more sensitive Bubblers, but it was one of the most exciting experiences, to jag this beast and bring it in. I can understand the passion that fisher folk feel – very atavistic and primitive, but very seductive and adrenaline-boosting. I should mention that we were all women on this charter, most of us in our 50s, and I think the two blokes who run the business will be talking about us for some time! Between us we caught about 30 kilos of snapper, in the form of 5 very large fish. Unreal! PLEASE don’t BubbleMail me if my hunting exploits offend – I understand some peoples’ repugnance, and I’m not a bloodthirsty person, but FISHING ROCKS!!!

Be wary of boys who boast / Find out the fare / Before you rollercoast

I was a little hesitant to submit this piece as my first piece of writing on Red Bubble. I originally wrote this when I was 14 years old. A girl who rode my school bus told everyone how she had lost her virginity on Friday the 13th. This is the only poem I’ve ever written that I am able to recite. Written in 1994
