This is yet another Kimberley shot. I was taken my the colour contrasts and starkness of the landscape. This is a pretty small boab tree but contrasted the vivid red dirt and blue sea near Broome.

At Broome, WA I was at Darwin at Christmas time when a catagory 4 Cyclone warning was in force, when that abated a monsoon hit. ‘Poop poop’ off to Broome .. where the monsoon followed. A beautiful place to return to.
Giant Boabs at sunset near Morondava in Madagascar. What you can’t see is the forest fire behind me which made the sunset even more spectacular.
This is a very long ‘story..We (I) always think we have to travel to far destinations.,to find new stories, new faces..’.Now .I live in Broome, Western Australia, a ‘very’ beautifull part of the world , I can say this because I have travelled a lot..But here right under my own (very) big nose, is also a lot happening and there are amazing faces and people to be seen…and also a lot of destruction and there are many sad stories to be told…under those sad and scarred faces live beautifull people and i like to share this with you..it will be a ‘journey’’ and I know it will not always be easy maybe dangerous? but that does not stop my drive..Today my husband asked me to bring my camera to our Restaurant to make some shots of our newly arrived import which hangs in our restaurant, so i took the shots and after work I just had this strong urge to walk into the mangroves, behind our local liquorshop and see if I could find these people,..the homeless, the drunks, the scarred and ‘lost’ souls….My teenage daughter and our kitchenhand where asking where I was going? Oh I said I’ll go to the mangroves…No don’t thats to dangerous by yourself…I’ve spent 1 1/2 hours and had a wonderfull time..Oh yes it’s rough but boy I love those people…..I hope I dont offend anybody because that is not my intentention, my intention is to show the beauty and the life of this people and I will try to make a whole series and make notes of their “stories’ of how life treats them….. / My website
Behind bottleshop I found Mr. Moscow, an old Broome local and the hat did give him this name. he always wears it even in the soring heat. Today I went out and gave my first visit at the magroves behind ‘bottleshop’. / There where a few ‘mobs’ (do i spell this right? I asked them why you guys don’t sit all together..? cause I saw several groups under different trees…Oh NO miss under this tree ‘we’always’ sit, this “Broome mob” ,under ‘that’ tree is different mob, different tribe,...oh ok..?I said, you guys always sit under same tree…yes miss….always we sit under same tree…(serie of 3)

“A Boab Sunrise” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © Sony a100 camera / Photoshop CS4 artwork The Australian Aboriginal legend of the Boab Tree (or Bottle Tree): “When the tree God created the Boab Tree it was to be the most beautiful of all trees in the universe, with the most beautiful flowers and bearing the juiciest fruit. But as the tree grew to maturity its flowers were mediocre and its fruit had a bad odour and tasted vile. The Tree God became so angry that he yanked the Boab out of the ground and slammed it back in the earth upside down and that is why today, when you see a Boab tree, it looks as if its roots are growing up in the air.” Thangool, Queensland A Boab Sunrise was featured in the: Trees group – Sept 09 Image Writing group – Sept 09 Queensland group – Sept 09 Inspired Art group – Oct 09

Water gets into the cracks on the side of an old decaying boat hull and darkens the surface. These patterns reminded me of the boab trees that grow in the North of Australia. I have been working on making a series of abstract images from boats at a Maylands boatyard where old boats in dry dock are brought back to life.
“Gondwana Boab” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © / Sony a100 camera / Photoshop CS4 artwork There are two theories about how boab trees arrived in Australia. One says the seeds have floated here from Africa and spread from the coast. The other theory suggests boabs might have survived from the time when Africa and Australia were both still part of one continent, the ancient Gondwana, 65 million years ago.
