  • A BMX rider passes a church building next to the site of Pisco’s San Clemente Cathedral in December 2007, three and a half months after the earthquake that destroyed more than 90 per cent of the city’s buildings, including the cathedral, leaving over 100,000 people homeless. / / / / 50 per cent of the artists proceeds from sales of this image on RedBubble will be donated to Hands On Disaster Response This organisation provides assistance in disaster zones during the initial stages of the emergency. • THE SUBJECT: / Everything was perfect for this shot. There was no surfing action off the breakwater and I was on my way back to the car when I saw young Damien here and his mate practicing some BMX moves. / I sauntered over and made a few tentative shots when Damien came over and asked if I would make shots of the moves so he could see how he was going. So with a more than co-operative subject I set myself up for a good afternoon session with these two dudes. THE LOCATION: / At the ramp at Town Beach, Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘Damien Tries a Tabletop Look Down #1’: / It was back in the days of my old workhorse the Fuji S5500 and I was using 3x Multi-shot high resolution .jpg. I had also left the camera set to Hard Sharpen which is NOT a good thing to do when shooting .jpg unless you are shooting architecture or such. No sharpening was applied to this at all during processing and I actually had to soften the edges slightly with a 5% Lens Blur to help get rid of the white halo artefacts. A 20% Lens Blur was used on the background behind the spectator. / I pre-focussed on an area of grass at the same distance as Damien would when up in the air then with the shutter release still half way down I framed the ramp and waited for the action. / Believe it or not NO flash was used here! The natural light from the lowering winter sun was absolutely spot on for the session. / While the colour version is quite good I much prefer this B&W version as it allows the viewer to concentrate more on Damien. / Fuji S5500: 1/1000sec @ f/3.1, ISO100, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. Visit the Sport & Leisure collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more cycling action. UPDATE: 8-9-09 / Young Damien was awarded a Merit in the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club’s August 2009 Competition in the Open Large Monochrome Print Section: Enjoy! BMX / (Click the links!) • ...cause boys will be boys! This image was shot using a LOMO Action Sampler and 400 ASA Superia Fuji Film hence the slight grain. other shots using the lomo action sampler One-second has been neatly dissected into four composite parts and lined up in perfect order to give you one shaky piece of 2×2 sampled action. / Tis more than a photograph and not quite a movie, you’ve got a permanent documentation of a snippet taken from your very own existence somewhere in the time-space continuum. / Tis also one wacky piece of photographic equipment, tis a real camera which consists of a tacky plastic box with four lenses strapped to the front, and inside are a few springs and cogs that reluctantly turn a full circle when you press the shutter release. / By some strange coincidence a standard boring old 35 mm film fits neatly into this box. Each time you hit the shutter release, despite the inferior quality of the lenses, light actually exposes the film at quarter-of-a-second intervals. / As soon as it’s bright enough the Action Sampler’s lenses go into action, giving you unexpected colours, haze and blur and a whole new world of shapes that’ll blow your mind. / The Action Sampler is not a finely tuned piece of apparatus made only of the finest in hand-crafted modern materials, it’s made of plastic. It is not a precision instrument with settings for the slightest nuance in aperture and lighting, it won’t even take a flash and the lenses are moody little beasties, reluctant to let any light get to the film at all.

  • (Client Upload) Robbie, doing what he loves best.

  • Shot in Berlin, Germany, August 2006. LG action sports games, Vert Ramp. There was a large number of talented riders at this event, this guy in particular was grabbing the gnarliest air of the afternoon. Sometimes up so high for so long it was almost like living slow motion.

  • If you’re young and have a BMX, it’s never too hot to have fun.
