  • Surfing just before dawn. The water color comes from the dawn light reflecting off high clouds in the sky. Canon 1Ds Mark II / 600 mm focal length / 1/15 second / f/4 / ISO 50 Panning and trying to keep the surfer in one spot in the frame produces the fluidity and quality to the water.

  • Photographed in Santa Barbara, California during a smokey morning from a nearby wild fire which created the colors in the water. Canon 1Ds Mark II / f/16 / 1/8 second / ISO 50 / 600 mm focal length

  • A combination of a smokey atmosphere, slow shutter speed and panning of the camera created this photo. Canon 1Ds Mark II / f/22 / 1/4 second / 600 mm focal length

  • I was having my coffee this morning on the balcony while watching the rain and it gave me an idea so here it is! This was taken of the rain coming down on the balcony balustrade with the clouds in the background. I know that there are lots of amazing captures of splashes here on RB but this image really wasn’t about the splash, to me, it was more about the capture of morning rain. Best viewed large :o) Nikon D200 / 18-200mm lens, 5.6f / exposure 1/320 / processed in RAW

  • Kids swinging at the park.

  • If I could sum this up in one perfect word, it would be Ragadellic. Don’t you think? I guess one of my guilty pleasures are Chuck T’s. You just can’t get a more perfect shoe. This is the Converse Generation as they say. / Everyone takes photos of Allstars, I know, but they are a good subject, so why not? This is my first attempt of a Converse shot, and I think I did pretty well. • A ‘burn’ is the Scottish Highland name for a stream, creek or beck. On my walk through the forest, I spotted a broken branch of Rowan, with its lovely Autumnal reds, and placed it on the ledge next to the miniature waterfall. A still – life of Nature. / The water was coloured with the peat that it picks up as it flows through the hillside. / All that was missing were the fairies ! I deliberately blurred the water, using f22 on my Canon EOS 40D, mounted securely on my tripod, fitted with a polarising filter to reduce the light still further ( it was quite low light under the canopy of trees). The shutter speed was 15 seconds ! I used my Tamron 28-300mm lens set at 135mm, iso 100, cloudy wb, RAW file Processed in PS CS3. Most of my processing is done in Adobe Camera Raw. I applied selective curves/levels adjustments, selective colour, and sharpened with Intellisharpen. • I am circling around God, around the ancient tower, / and I have been circling for a thousand years, / and I still don’t know if I am a falcon, or a storm, / or a great song. (Rainer Maria Rilke)

  • Shot with the loupymattlens, and Canon 5D Mk II, f/8 (apparently), 1/40”, ISO 800…..manual settings!!! Sometimes I shock myself! More info on the lens A tiny bit of processing done to add a little more light on the subject, otherwise this is straight from the cam…gotta love the 5D Miss Bertie Page doing what she does best! • Lensbaby is offering the chance for RedBubble members to win one of their remarkable Composer lenses. They are offering four lenses for the best images that highlight the creative potential of sharpness contrasted with blur. HERE IS WHERE YOU ENTER We are thrilled to be able to offer the Lensbaby lenses to the RedBubble community. To our mind the power of the images made possible with their lenses (Selective Focus SLR Lenses) mimic how we see. Some things leap clearly into focus while others are diffused. They give the power to the photographer to share their creative viewpoint. The Lensbaby Group on RedBubble shows some of the creative potential of these lenses. You don’t need to use a Lensbaby lens to enter the challenge. Just demonstrate the creative potential of blur in a photograph. The top three images as chosen by the community will receive a Lensbaby Composer and there will be one curator’s pick as well. We hope this partnership with Lensbaby will kick off more opportunities for us to offer prizes for the community. So help it to be successful by informing your friends, camera clubs, online communities etc. Last week we had a look at some of the creative potential of blur in images and described how the Lensbaby system works. Mel Brackstone has also reviewed Lensbaby lenses.
