RedBubble’s decision to censor works of political criticism that feature the US flag is to be strongly deplored. The works criticised the policies of the US as promulgated by their president and in no way insinuated that any other individuals were to blame. They can be seen > probably for the next nanosecond > here I am unwilling to continue to contribute to an online community that bows to the lowest common denominator and folds at the first whinge from narrow-minded bigots. Redbubble directly profits from the development of community – but if it cannot be trusted to uphold reasonable freedom of expression then it should not profit from the creativity of those it will not support. When Mick’s work is removed, I will be removing my own. I ask everyone of good faith and belief in freedom of expression to do the same. I will also be writing to redbubble’s admin to make my case and explain why I think that they are wrong.

I have had a couple of requests asking me how I do my portraits. / I may not do this the right or the most effective way, but this is what I have learnt from playing around so far, only just a newby to all of this. FOR STARTERS, BACK DROP AND LIGHTING / Sheet on the good ol’ hills clothes line for the backdrop, and the sunshine for my lighting. I havent used reflectors before, but would like to get some eventually. Other than that, I cant really say what I do, I just shoot. PHOTOSHOP / Using one of my shots ‘Blue’ as an example, using 4 steps to achieve, the eyes, the skin tone, converting to mono, and selective colour. The way I bring out the eyes is something I do for all my portraits. TO BRING OUT THE EYES / To start with, use the lasso tool, and select the eyes and mouth, then apply the unsharp mask. / To help bring out the eyes even more, use the dodge tool, set for midtones at about 7% using a small brush. *I never sharpen the entire image in portraits, just the eyes, and mouth, sometimes the hair. SKIN TONE / I use a program called ‘Neat Image’, a noise reduction program, which helps smooth out skin tones. This is the only shot i have used on a childs portrait, as I dont really think its necessary, and it can also effect the eye and mouth area, so careful not to overdo it. CONVERTING TO MONO / Layer – New Fill colour – Solid colour – set mode to color. In color picker set all values in RGB to 28. / This is the way I convert most of my images to mono, much more effective way than desaturating image. SELECTIVE COLOUR / Select the second layer and using a small soft brush eraser tool, delete the parts you want in colour. / For the edges change the opacity to about 20% to avoid a harsh line and to blend between mono and color. / Then going back to the first layer, I play around with the levels / and colour adjustment until you get the effect you want. I think thats about it. Hopefully this helps, and if anyone has any other tips, corrections, or better ways to do this, would love to learn.

Announcing a new Photo Competition. The theme is “Once in a Blue Moon” / Deadline February 28, 2008 You don’t need to have a blue moon in your entry. For example, pigs flying, snow in Los Angeles etc. This is wide open for your imagination. / Requirements: The entries must have been worked on in Photoshop only. No other editing or specialty programs are allowed. See the rules below. / The artwork must be brand new artwork. As I start to write this entry, for some reason, the sound of “We are the Champions” by Queen is running around in my head…why? I have no idea. Unless it means that all RedBubblers are champions? So “my friends” I write on regardless of the “earworms” To paint in the Chinese way, you will need the “Four Treasures” paper [zhi], brushes [bi], inksticks [mo] and ink stones [yan]....I am not Chinese, so I hope I got the spelling right. You can also use bottled permanent ink, but I have a real fondness for the traditional ink stick, [more about ink later] plus it is much blacker, and has the authentic look of an Oriental painting. I must stress at this point, that the materials are extremely inexpensive, [read cheap] and thank goodness, as no other brushes will work….put away the watercolour brushes and buy only Chinese brushes…Japanese brushes will not work either. / The brushes, paper and ink will cost just a few dollars, especially if you go to a Chinese art supply shop….failing that, your regular art supply shop should stock them as well. A word or two about paper, which though it’s commonly called “rice paper”, is mostly made from bamboo pulp…you can get it with some sizing, which helps to control the ink, but why not throw caution to the winds and buy it unsized, which is what I used in all my paintings. / It may be a little frustrating to use at first, but you might discover as I did, that loss of control of paint can be a good thing, leading to hitherto unimagined heights of creativity. The brush is of paramount importance…everything depends on it….some of those available today were the same ones used in the Ming Dynasty [1368-1664] / Get three….purists will say you need only one….just don’t tell them what I said….. a soft goat or sheep hair, usually white, for broad washes, a harder brush, dark brown, for you got it, those all important calligraphy lines, and maybe a third with a blend of both kind of hairs. / I personally went mad and bought a whole bunch as I was intoxicated with the prices and thought somebody had made a dreadful mistake, and put the wrong numbers on. / I am so used to spending several hundred dollars on only one watercolour brush, that a brush for just a few dollars seemed unbelievable… Now I can hear you saying “goat”? Just the hair folks..just the hair….nobody died. / Remember this is traditional Chinese brush painting, and a synthetic brush cannot produce the same results….only natural fibers can provide the resilience and hold liquids long enough for the long and varied strokes that are so essential to the genre….. also the firm brushes will spring back easily and make the thinnest of lines, and at those prices you can afford to get the very best the shop has to offer. Look after your brushes…they will come with glue on the bristles, and after you’ve washed that off, do not recap…always wash them after use and do not let them stand in water…. Clicking on the painting below will lead you to my website and pictures of the tools you will require to try this fascinating art. The Tide Pool by Janis Zroback :

I was pleasantly surprised to arrive home from a few days away and find that my image Persistence has won the recent Australian Bush and Rainforest Photography Challenge!! This goes to show the benefits of (1) looking in strange and unlikely places for photo subjects (under an old piece of tin!!) (2) posting photos that you maybe don’t feel are absolute masterpieces (I was of two minds about this one!) and (3) entering challenges ‘just in case’ !!!! THANK you to the wonderful hosts of this group, to those who voted, and all who faithfully comment, favourite, and encourage. Hugs…

My latest camera…..a butter shortbread tin that has a nicely fitting lid. !http://images-0.redbubble.net/img/art/size:ularge/view:ma…
My latest camera…..a butter shortbread tin that has a nicely fitting lid. Just about everything I make is a prototype….that means it is the shoddy test version just to try out the design. The problem is that my prototypes usually work so well that I don’t need to make the proper version. This was easily constructed. I did some painting of black poster paint inside the tin and glued an old bootlace around the edge of the lid to help seal it (but I don’t really think it was that necessary…it already fitted very well, just another precaution). I banged a big nail through the front of the lid in the centre and hammered and sanded until it was smooth enough. I never have a drink can handy so for the pinhole I used a piece cut from an aluminium take away container. I carefully pierced it with a pin and sanded it flat as well as I could. This I attached with some very cheap shiny black cloth tape that I got in the $2 shop. I vaguely attempted to cover the shine with some of the poster paint. I did use a little permanent black marker around the pinhole. I constructed a swish sort of shutter that spins on a paper clip, but I think I could have just used another piece of black adhesive tape or even a fridge magnet. The best bit of the design is the cut up fridge magnet used inside to hold the sheet of photographic paper in place. My most successful exposure was this approximately 20 second one which had areas of full sun. It was latish afternoon. This one had areas of direct sun but was mostly in shade, exposure about 25 seconds, probably not really enough. This one was indoors underneath two skylights. I gave this a bit less than two minutes but it obviously only picked up the skylights and there was insufficient light to show any other detail. Try again! The paper I exposed in the camera was Agfa variable contrast premium mcp 312 rc semi matt, 5 by 7 inch. / It is at least 20 years old. / I made up a coffee and washing soda mixture and used it as a developer for the paper negative. I think I used 10 heaped teaspoons of instant coffee powder, 5 heaped teaspoons of washing soda and about 700ml of luke warm water. I was a bit sloppy about this as I wasn’t sure how much I needed in the tray. This developer works very slowly, I probably developed the paper for at least 15 minutes. One advantage is that it seems impossible to over develop….I’m sure in the past with regular chemistry I have watched things develop too fast and have failed to catch them at the right point. The only problem seemed to be that there was a bit of staining with the long developing time. I also sustained a few scratches on the print and I think in future I will not use tongs, just my fingers, maybe gloves. I might also try a warm solution and see if that speeds things up a bit. I used a vinegar stop bath and my ancient hypam as fixer. I don’t know how these negative paper images will last but I don’t really mind as I now have them safely scanned. I tried to scan them at as high a resolution as I could but my scanner struggles with 1200dpi and leaves strange lines. Then into photoshop they go, get inverted and twiddled a bit to bring out the best that can be found. I think better exposures will yield better results, but I am happy to have the system working this well. I could do with advice about keeping paper and film clean, not getting watery smudges and hairs and the like….any suggestions would be helpful.

Hello, I sell art as cell phone wall-papers on a popular site called myxer. I got an account there because I’m in a band so I figured I’d start selling my art there as well. It’s a safe way to sell your art because it’s small when it’s a wall paper. If anyone else wants to sell then we can work out a 50% spit and it won’t cost you anything. The selling of my wall-papers will be advertised on www.blogus.proboards.com which is my free message board. Let me know.

If you ever find yourself south of the river, and wander east from Elephant and Castle tube station, through some suitably bleak housing estates, you will stumble across a derelict and boarded up 1960s housing block. You will probably check you know where your wallet is. If you head into flat 151, you will be greeted with a pitch black but clearly dilapidated interior of what was once someone’s sweet home. It’s dark, filthy and quite depressing. But if you clamber through a hole they’ve smashed in the wall to the flat next door you’ll find yourself in a copper sulphate crystal palace. You will probably check to see if you brought a camera. / ^That’s a light bulb, or was, or something. Robert Hiorns sealed off the interior of one of these flats, made it watertight and filled it with 75,000L of copper sulphate solution at 60’, then when it cooled to 30’ he drained out the liquid leaving this completely bizarre and quite impressive installation known as Seizure. I recommend.

My home is surrounded by gardens and forests and we have an abundance of these magnificent little birds – the spendid fairy wrens – more commonly known as “Blue Wrens”. I had the fun of watching a little female wren build a nest in the jade bush a few weeks ago right down at eye (read….CAMERA) level…..and the kids and I have enjoyed watching the whole process. As I took so many photos I thought I would just share them here as a journal rather than do multiple uploads. Little Mrs Wren … and of course….MR Wren himself….. Mrs Wren laid three eggs in her little nest, This was taken on Day Two of the whole process which took exactly three weeks from the eggs being laid till the baby flew the coop ….... On day eleven, the first egg hatched. The baby was smaller than my thumbnail, and resembled a raw chicken at the supermarket….so tiny and fragile with skin covering the eyes. It was hard to imagine that from this point, it would be only ten days till it flew away! This is where it got really interesting. My good camera rarely picks up orbs, nor do I expect it to. I am told by those who “know” that it has something to do with the high quality and curve of the glass/lenses etc, and that to capture orbs the cheaper glass of point and shoot cameras is the best option. But on this day, we were overwhelmed with excitement at seeing the hatchling but even more so, when we viewed the image, discovering there was an orb in its beak. / Mother Wren sits on her nest patiently, except when out foraging for food. These images were taken on day sixteen of the story, where the baby was five days old. By this point we realized the other two eggs were not ever going to hatch, but they remained in the nest just the same. I noticed too, that the orb had reappeared. It made me wonder whether it was an entity drawn to the new energy of the baby bird, or whether it was our joy at seeing this little creature or something similar within us, that was manifested this way …. Ten days since hatching, the little one is out of the nest at last, fumbling around as it tries to get little wings and legs coordinated….. After fluttering on the ground, we took pity and helped lift the baby up to the higher branches of a paperbark tree, where the parents were calling frantically. Typical baby, it never stopped chatting at its Mother…... “food!! food!! food!!!” After a bit of a drama, where the cat suddenly appeared in their tree (where we had helped place the baby), we found the parents and baby back on the ground, and my nine year old daughter gently held out her hand and the baby hopped onto her finger. Together we followed the two screeching parent birds, as they “showed” us where they wanted us to put him….up on the garage roof where there was a large overhanging branch….. their choice of a “better” place to be…. / and so we did…. and they all fluttered off to safety. And the family was complete. I have to admit, I was very impressed with the Father Wren as he was just as protective as the Mother (who naturally got ferocious and very protective when we were trying to help the baby) and at times during our “rescues”, he was right in my face eyeballing me while he hovered mid air, telling me to be careful and not harm his offspring!!! I am aware that in the nature, this process of baby leaving the nest would not require any help from we humans, even if it resulted in tragedy, as that seems to be the process of survival in the wild, but here in my yard, where there is a dog, two ponies and several cats, not to mention many other larger birds, such as crows, kookaburras and magpies etc, we took a bit of responsibility in making sure no harm came to the little one on its first day out! I hope you enjoyed seeing these images – my children and I felt really special to be allowed to share in this process and be witness to such a special three weeks!
