small watercolour painting from my sketch book. I painted this with some cheap watercolour paints which were labelled Brilliant (cant remember the brand) I don’t know how permanent these ones are but I love the bright colours and they got me started in this medium.

views: 3424 / favs: 52 Completed 2004 age 18 I was inspired by the Japanese artist Hiroshi Senju, who tends to limit his colors in his paintings. Sometimes he paints an image where the background is the complimentary colors of the subject. His style is simple but at the same time intense, where the foreground stands out from the complimentary background. Medium: Watercolors This is a painting done in my sketchbook. The paper isn’t watercolor paper, but at least more durable than regular printing paper. In my most recent series: ‘Face Navigation’ , I have used the fluidity of watercolour painting to express a personal perception of self and others. There is an awareness of the universal human condition through facial expression, and in some cases I create a progression of images, exploring the changing perception of a person by deconstructing facial recognition. As there is a shift over time in attitude or mood, there is a corresponding shift in visual interpretation. Sizes variable, average sizes 250×102 mm. Fiiiiiiinally finished. A companion piece to this one I did a year and a half ago: I decided the other day that there was a distinct lack of blue paintings in my folio! Had to rectify the situation. This was an interpretation of the lyrics to the 1920’s Louis Armstrong song, Black and Blue. Essentially it is about racism and division. The little girl is looking at what she will probably never obtain. / It is a mixture of watercolour, ink, pen and collage.

Been a while since I did a beakface. This one has a hinged beak! A bit out of shape though. Little – 10×15cm, watercolour, chalk pastel, ink, conte, iridescent blue pigments (on the feather tips) on canvas. Unbelievably, unlike most other photos of my works, you can kind of see the iridescent pigments! Visit me on facebook: /

“The Centre of Your Soul is part of the Abstract Collection..look closely and the brush strokes will seem to coalesce into the imagery expressed in the poem... / I started to create the work with the poem running through my head, and as the brush moved across the paper, the abstract image emerged at the same time as the water, garden, and river made their presence known. / It was exactly as I wanted it to be…a feeling of great depth, a submergence of self, and surrender to the soul. Watercolour and Watercolour mediums on Arches Not Paper… 1144 Views Features in Prize Challenges There is a quiet water / In the center of your soul, / Where a son or daughter / Can be taught what no man knows. There’s a fragrant garden / In the center of your soul, / Where the weak can harden / And a narrow mind can grow. There’s a rolling river / In the center of your soul, / An eternal giver / With a rich and endless flow. There’s a land of muses / In the center of your soul, / Where the rich are losers / and the poor are free to go. So remain with me, then, / To pursue another goal / And to find your freedom / In the center of your soul.. J. Kavanaugh
/ “Yesterday” is part of the Fall Landscape Collection...the song “Yesterday” is one of my favourites and was the inspiration for this painting….my interpretation is not a literal one, but more about the feelings that the lyrics may engender….the song is so inspiring, and as fall is drifting away from us the first thng that came to my mind was that longing for it to last a little longer…the colours I instinctively chose were a blending of the fires of autumn and the cooler blues of winter…as it’s a memory, the image has been softened…..winter has come, frost is on the branches, and we reminisce about the beautiful autumn days that are no longer here... / “Yesterday” is not for mourning, but for looking back at it’s joys, and looking forward to more…..it may be the winter of our lives or the end of a romance, but we all dream of...Yesterday... Watercolour on Arches Paper… 364 Views Yesterday, Yesterday, / Days I knew as happy sweet sequestered days. / Golden days, golden days, / Days of mad romance and love.. / Joys were mine to take, / Joys were mine to give. / Free and gaily flaming life, / was mine to live. / Sad am I, glad am I, / For today I’m dreaming of, / Yesterday..Jerome Kern For Irene Dunne fans… listen to her lovely, heartfelt, interpretation of Yesterday /
The Nothing That Is” is part of the Winter collection…this is a complicated thought…Winter is indeed something, as we know here in the North…most people would say that Winter is white, but in the city we have the reflections of all the colour in the buildings and lights that the snow reflects…but most of all the joys of winter, I think, should be portrayed in brilliant colour…the stark white of the birches pop against the blues and purples, and there is a little green and gold to remind us that the earth is still alive underneath. / In the face of all that winter is, Man himself becomes “Nothing” and “Beholds Nothing that is not there, and sees the Nothing that is”... Watercolour on Arches Paper… 769 Views...Featured Work…. One must have a mind of winter / To regard the frost and the boughs / Of the pine-trees crusted with snow / And have been cold a long time, / To behold the junipers shagged with ice, / The spruces rough in the distant glitter / Of the January sun; and not to think / Of any misery in the sound of the wind, / In the sound of a few leaves, / Which is the sound of the land / Full of the same wind / That is blowing in the same bare place. / For the listener, who listens in the snow, / And, nothing himself, beholds / Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is ..Wallace Stevens / /
