This is a Common Blue Violet growing in late April on a moss covered rock beside a stream in Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Tennessee. / “Viola sororia, also known as the Common Blue Violet, is a stemless herbaceous perennial plant that is native to eastern North America. It is known by a number of common names including; Common Meadow Violet, Purple Violet, Woolly Blue Violet, Hooded Violet and Wood Violet. The species name was formerly Viola papilionacea. Near the village of Aysgarth the River Ure tumbles over a series of broad limestone steps which are known as Aysgarth Falls. Although not particularly high the waterfalls are one of Wensleydale’s most famous beauty spots (having been featured in the Kevin Costner film “Robin Hood – Prince of Thieves”), with a pleasant riverside walk linking the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls. Trekking to Island Peak (Imja Tse) up the Imja Drengka valley. This is one of my favourite pictures from the trek – I had to walk off the beaten track and into the stream trying not to slip and break my ankle in the cold cold water. Taken with a Canon 400D using a 17-85mm IS USM lens with circular polarising filter.
