Another from the pine forest in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, Sunday 20 April. With the picturesque shack, lichen covered pine trees, red mushrooms, and then the mist rolling in, I was torn in so many directions – in the end I made an attempt to get all elements in the one shot! / / Margo has kindly provided me with the following info on the red mushrooms – glad I didn’t taste any – I could have flown like Santa’s reindeers!!! / / (1) The Fly Agaric Amanita muscaria is the famous white-spotted red toadstool beloved of children’s book illustrators. They are widely known as one of the few poisonous fungi in the UK, but it is not generally realised that this is because they are in fact strongly psychedelic. Eaten raw, they cause stomach cramps, hallucinations1 and, possibly, death. In some parts of Europe they have long been associated with magic and legend. In Lapland, reindeer regularly get high on them and are seen to leap around, giving rise to the story of Santa’s flying reindeer. Lapps have a custom of deliberately feeding them to their deer, and then collecting and drinking the urine because most of the toxins are filtered out by the reindeer’s digestive system. 1 They are not the same thing as ‘magic mushrooms’. (2) Also, ‘toad-stuhl’ is a German name meaning ‘seat of death’. _ / Landscapes Trees Cards EOD Rusty Flowers Architecture Macro CatchAll DM / /

On my journey across America, I found some beautiful places, but this was one of my favorite. I was traveling the highway leading from Santa Fe, NM to Colorado. As I was entering Colorado, driving on endless road, I went by an abandoned gas station. About a half mile down the road, I knew something was wrong, and I had missed out on a great opportunity. I turned around, and returned to the abandoned buildings, and walked around. I spent about an hour climbing over broken windows and walls, and as the sun was beginning to set, I snapped this shot out one of the windows. I feel as though this shot embodies much of that journey across America for me. It has a feeling of isolation, but also of being present, and alive. And authentic. Looking through the window frame, I saw beauty, and life.
Blue Rocks is a small village on the shores of Lunenburg Bay in Nova Scotia. It stands to seaward of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, somewhat to the east. For many years a fishing village, it was discovered by many artists and photographers (Including Joseph Purcell, William E. deGarthe, Jack L. Gray, Wallace R. MacKaskill and others) beginning in the 1940’s. Today the village boasts many artists, and there are also numerous guest houses to be found among the fishermen’s dwellings.

This large oil painting of Pelican Bay is an inspiration from my heart and soul. I lived on my 36’ Columbia all alone for many years and sailed into Mexico from San Diego. I now live on the Central Coast of California where Pelican’s flock. The warm, welcome, glorious, feelings of the moon at sunset, old boats, and small harbors thrill all my senses. My hope is that viewers of this painting also experience the warm fuzzies that accompany nostalgic beauty.
/ Featured in Goldrush and Ghost Towns St. Elmo is a ghost town Founded in 1880. Nearly 2,000 people settled in this town when mining for gold and silver became evident.
