  • “Serene Seas” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © Taken at the Whitsunday Islands, Queensland, Australia. “Somewhere beyond the sea / Somewhere waiting for me / My lover stands on golden sands / And watches the ships that go sailin” “Somewhere beyond the sea / She’s there watching for me / If I could fly like birds on high / Then straight to her arms / I’d go sailin’.” / ~ Bobby Darin

  • MOONRISE OVER PEMBROKESHIRE BEACH

  • I have been here and seen the coming of man to my rivers. In my shadows have walked wildlife that no longer walk here. From my lofty peaks you can see for many miles. Once I stood higher than the far western mountains. I may have shifted and changed but I remain. My rivers are cold and my forest cool. From my bowels man has both feed himself and built his shelters. He has raped my slopes for my wood. Fought wars within me. I still survive. Mist still shroud my valleys. Flowers still shine their beauty for all to see. Come walk my paths an fish my streams. Stand on my peaks and walk my valleys. Loose yourself within yourself as your cares fade away when your with me. I am the Great Smoky Mountains, the Great Iron Mountains, Far Blue Mountains, the Sha-cona-ga. Most just call me the Smokies, and I remain. And a quote from John Muir “The mountains, are fountains, not only of rivers and fertile soil, but of men

  • The peaceful harbor of Port Alexander, Alaska. / I’d been waiting for a night like this… clear nights are rare here in SE Alaska.. finally, night before last… May 6, 2009…. saw the moon, grabbed the camera and tripod and headed down the boardwalk to my chosen location. Didn’t find out that I’d forgotten to attach the plate for the ball head (for the tripod) until I got there… it was too far to head back for it, so I laid the camera down on a not-nearly-flat-enough rock. What a time I had adjusting my body on the COLD rock so I could actually see thru the viewfinder to compose the shot! Good Grief… the things we’ll do to get the shot…. AND… then… a thought passed quickly thru my head… (we should NEVER, EVER think THIS thought!)... / WHAT else could possibly go wrong???! / Just then my peaceful surroundings vanished at the sound of a large animal breathing in the woods behind me… Wanted to try more settings and wasn’t sure at all that I’d gotten sharp shot, but decided it would be best to get out there! I heard the bear, yes I’m sure it was a bear, moving in the woods just before rounding a blind corner between two large rock cliffs… I started whistling… no tune in particular… just wanted to let the bear know I was coming! (So he could easily find me to EAT ME! – lol… kidding) Held my breathe, clenched my jaw, and repeated in my head, “Please, no bear… Pulllleeeease, NO BEAR!” as I rounded the corner… / Obviously I made it home safely! The bear made visits to a couple of homes here that night. / Think it might be time to find a way to permanantly attach the bear spray to my body, since I can’t seem to remember to grab it! A rather heavy earring perhaps? Best Viewed Larger / Port Alexander harbor, May 6, 2009 9:26pm / cropped, slight sharpening, noise reduction / D90 18-200mm Lens / Exp. 2 sec. f/11 ISO 100
