Large oak tree in California….....just breaking buds in spring. All the original limbs have broken off with age and snow load. These limbs are all secondary growth.
Taking a few minutes before my “Days End”. The colors are much cooler showing why these are known as the lower Blue Ridge Mountains. The foggy mist is why these particular mountains became known as the Smokys the colors and layers of ridges drew me to this shot. So often in making sunset/sunrise shots photographers shoot one or two shots and move on. This time of day is one of rapidly changing tones. Some of the most dramatic shots can be made after most have left or got there. When the clouds are illuminated by the sun after/before it has pasted the horizon. Those photographers willing to slow down an spend some time will be the ones fully enjoying this time of day when the warm/cool colors met, mingle, and drift apart. As you can see between the 2 shots 2 minutes make a dramatic difference. Just before the storm came in and sent us scurrying down the mountain for cover.
It was at about this moment that the snow started to come down in earnest and we feared we wouldn’t make it down the perilous road. Well, in a controlled manner that is… I’m sure we’d have made it down if we let gravity, near zero visibility, slippery white substance under wheels and hands trembling erraticly on the steering wheel have their way… sobs

Early this morning I decided to drive about an hour into the Blue Mountains to go for a bit of bushwalking and to check out the lookouts around the Wentworth Falls area. / However the weather was terrible, with it basically being a whiteout with visibility down to about 20m and constant drizzling rain, so not the best weather for lookouts and photography! / I decided to head over to King’s Tableland and have a look at McMahon’s Lookout which is down the end of a 20km dirt track, however half way down the road I decided to capture the view in front of me which consisted of the road and trees disappearing into the thick mist. / I will have to head back up on a clearer day! / Photo taken with barely any post processing, just exposure, black point and levels.. / Thanks for having a look, as always comments and critiquing are most welcome.. Thanks for looking The Legend / _The Aboriginal dream-time legend has it that three sisters, ‘Meehni’, ‘Wimlah’ and Gunnedoo’ lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe. These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet tribal law forbade them to marry. The brothers were not happy to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters causing a major tribal battle. As the lives of the three sisters were seriously in danger, a witchdoctor from the Katoomba tribe took it upon himself to turn the three sisters into stone to protect them from any harm. While he had intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over, the witchdoctor himself was killed. As only he could reverse the spell to return the ladies to their former beauty, the sisters remain in their magnificent rock formation as a reminder of this battle for generations to come._

Sanctuary – Middle English, from Old French sainctuarie, from Late Latin s?nctu?rium, from Latin s?nctus, sacred, sanctify. Sacred place, especially the most sacred part of a sacred place. In ancient times and in the Middle Ages, a sanctuary served as asylum, a place of refuge for persons fleeing from violence or from the penalties of the law. To injure a person in sanctuary or to remove him from it forcibly was considered sacrilege. In Egypt the temples of Osiris and Amon offered the right of sanctuary. Under the Greeks all temples enjoyed this privilege, and certain ones, like the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, were known throughout the Mediterranean world as a haven for fugitives. In Rome fugitive slaves often sought sanctuary. Christian churches were given the right of sanctuary by Constantine I. Abuses of sanctuary, tending to encourage crime, led to its curtailment and abolition. Modern penal codes no longer recognize the right of sanctuary.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has water falls in many places. When its hot, people head for the hills of the Smokies. / Cool breezes and water. Swimming, fishing, hiking, and driving trails near by. Shop till you drop in Gatlinburg, and walk your dog if he is well behaved. All kinds of things to do and see, good old Tennessee. Piegon Forge is nearby, I know you like to eat, well I couldn’t name them all. Make fun at the way people talk, come on down yeu all. Maybe you haven’t been here yet, watch out for those curvey roads. One of the most visited parks in the good old USA. GSMNP has a tremendous diversity of plant life. Many people document it or just enjoy it. Rhododendron in bloom around the falls, this gorgous shrub is easily seen because it grows well on exposed ridges at 3,000 to 6,000 feet elevation. They grow 8-12 ft. high.and one of the first I added to my garden, along with the natural ones in the woods. They bloom in June and July in the Park, and about a months difference here later. / Oil on canvas JeffeeArt4u
