The Great Blue Heron sits almost motionless, despite the raging falls. Almost unseen. Waiting. I sit waiting too, watching … these grand creatures of water and wind. Moments, hours pass. Mist from the falls graces my face. Great Blue fishes; I sit in awe and wonder from the old wooden footbridge. Flight, almost flight, colors dance against the backdrop of the water. Heron Dance. A great blue heron flies so close to the surface of a lagoon in Oregon that its wingtip nearly touches the reflection in the water. Late afternoon autumn light helped with the image.

Too quickly, the Great Blue Herons will begin their migration. Perhaps this particular juvenile will return and grace us with its presence next summer. My heart and soul rejoices with the breathtaking return of these birds each year. They remain one of the vast icons of Vermont’s natural heritage. Autumn migration has begun … we are beginning to see other feathered friends on their long, arduous, journeys south. Photo taken on the North Branch of the Winooski River, Montpelier VT. September 16, 2008.

I photographed this majestic blue heron in Point Lobos State Reserve in CA. It’s been a little while between uploads! Here’s a new thing I’ve been doing (as well planning the imminent beakface world takeover). This bird is 25cmx20cm framed, various papers with cellophane, cotton, watercolour, graphic pen and metal leaf on metallic paper and cardboard mat. A fish for meeeee so juicy sweeeeeet…

Had a bit of fun with this one. This is the same heron, taken on the same day as Taking A Moment To Reflect / The critter took off right after I shot “Taking a Moment” ... and as I’d just changed my settings from “shutter priority” to “program” ... the better to get him standing by the side of the pond, the surprise in-flight shots weren’t at ALL what I’d hoped for. One of these days … sigh … but I’ve always liked this one so decided to play with it a bit. In actuality, the bird was farther to the right and lower … so I took him out of one layer, cloned the space he was in, enlarged him very slightly, and put him back in with another layer. I also applied the Ocean Ripple to the whole of the background layer several times to give it a fun texture and painterly look, but left the heron alone. I plopped him back in with the move tool, slightly higher and a bit more to the left to take advantage of the rule of thirds, and erased around him.

This shot was taken in Peebles, at the rear of Brown Brothers Garage. The Burn is the Cuddy & the Heron’s are regular visitors. They are quite nervous but with all the movement going on around them they seem reasonably tolerant of a little attention but not too much. /
