In a winter dusk, a great blue heron was standing on a peg on the beach. What is it doing? Listening to the ocean, I guess.

So I head to downtown Norfolk, Virginia to get a glimpse of the Tall Ships as they are coming into port for Harborfest 2008. Tall Ships are remarkably beautiful old sailing vessels from varies countries. However this is the the “Keeper” of the day for me. I think this is a Blue Heron, but I’m not 100% certain. It seemed to be smaller than a GBH, and is missing the long feathers on his chest, etc. Velveteagle ID’d this as a Yellow Crowned Night Heron, and I believe he may correct. He was hunting for Blue Crab, and I have multiple shots of that as well. Thanks for looking.

A great blue heron could be regularly seen with fishermen on Sanibel/Captiva Islands in southern Florida. Though the islands strictly prohibit the feeding of wildlife, I couldn’t help but wonder if this fellow has outsmarted the ban and learned how to hang around these humans who leave bait and unwanted tidbits after they depart from their fishing spots. Here he is in profile with a fisherman with pole in hand, heading home.
