The Great Blue Heron sits almost motionless, despite the raging falls. Almost unseen. Waiting. I sit waiting too, watching … these grand creatures of water and wind. Moments, hours pass. Mist from the falls graces my face. Great Blue fishes; I sit in awe and wonder from the old wooden footbridge. Flight, almost flight, colors dance against the backdrop of the water. Heron Dance. I photographed this majestic blue heron in Point Lobos State Reserve in CA. Had a bit of fun with this one. This is the same heron, taken on the same day as Taking A Moment To Reflect / The critter took off right after I shot “Taking a Moment” ... and as I’d just changed my settings from “shutter priority” to “program” ... the better to get him standing by the side of the pond, the surprise in-flight shots weren’t at ALL what I’d hoped for. One of these days … sigh … but I’ve always liked this one so decided to play with it a bit. In actuality, the bird was farther to the right and lower … so I took him out of one layer, cloned the space he was in, enlarged him very slightly, and put him back in with another layer. I also applied the Ocean Ripple to the whole of the background layer several times to give it a fun texture and painterly look, but left the heron alone. I plopped him back in with the move tool, slightly higher and a bit more to the left to take advantage of the rule of thirds, and erased around him.

For those wondering about the processing of this photo, it is a a one raw picture hdr, and all the settings were on default. I looked at it in photoshop and thought I am not changing a thing.

Sometimes I find it challenging to be still in this world where there is so much chaos and movement….it is not always easy to be still and listen to my inner wisdom…but in the midst of it all, when i stop and allow myself some quiet stillness, I always come back to my Knowing….the Knowing that All is Well….and in that I find my Peace. For me, the Great Blue Heron is the epitome of standing still and just being in the moment. Taken on a small pond in Tyler, Texas.
