  • Pure white clouds dot a pattern across a deep blue sky while the harsh, dry arizona landscape is whizzing by the few cars on the road. Ever notice how cars tend to clump together in little herds on highways instead of all spreading out? It’s a herd instinct because nobody wants to be left in the middle, alone and vulnerable to being picked out by cops, right? The clouds are also a type of “wandering herd.” / . / June 2007, Sedona, AZ

The rugged 16,000ha Carnarvon Gorge section of Carnarvon National Park is the most popular destination in Queensland’s central highlands. Remnant rainforest flourishes in the sheltered side-gorges while endemic cabbage tree palms Livistona nitida, ancient cycads, ferns, flowering shrubs and gum trees line the meandering main gorge. Grassy open forest grows on the cliff tops. The park’s creeks attract a wide variety of animals including more than 173 species of birds. Aboriginal rock art on sandstone overhangs is a fragile reminder of Aboriginal people’s long and continuing connection with the gorge. Some of the finest Aboriginal rock art in Australia, including ochre stencils, rock engravings and freehand paintings, can be seen at Baloon Cave, the Art Gallery and Cathedral Cave. • Part of my Rod’s & Relics calendar, based on my photo shoot in Springfield, MO on Route 66. A ‘55 Chevy BelAire leaving the Blue Swallow on Route 66. / The Blue Swallow Motel was built in 1939 by W. A. Huggins. It features a unique, personal shell design on the exterior stucco. Garages, a signature of motor courts of the era, are another unique characteristic of this motel. According to Huggins’ son, Phares, it was sold at a loss because of economic conditions at the onset of WWII. With gas and tire rationing in effect, people weren’t traveling as much. / The best known proprietor of the Blue Swallow was Lillian Redman, who acquired it in 1958. She operated the motel for almost 40 years, facing numerous difficulties including the interstate bypass, which drastically reduced her customer base. Get Your Kicks
