Captured in Cave Creek, Arizona, this was at the end of a short but powerful storm. The lightning was much too close, couldn’t stand with the tripod, just ran to it between strikes. Didn’t get too many keepers that night, but was happy with this one. Wish I had a better foreground, but sometimes you have to take what you can get. / / Other lightning shots: / / / /

With a heavy NE swell closing down most of the beaches along Australia’s East Coast over new year, not even the pools are safe. In a somewhat typical Aussie understatement, the sign at North Curl Curl pool on Sydney’s Northern Beaches says “Pool Closed, Dangerous Conditions” and that’s if you can get close enough to read it without being washed away. A new years day swim to shake out the NYE cobwebs from the previous night is pretty much out of the question. While I was there, there were some much bigger waves/sprays but this one was pretty solid and nicely balanced the image with the pool. There should probably also be a sign that says “Don’t stand so close to the pool taking photographs” or shoot telephoto from a distance rather than wideangle. But then what’s the fun in that? Although the two feet of water swirling around below me was a bit dicey at times.

Waiting to catch the train to meet 17 other mad keen photographers, what else does one do except take photos of the platform? This almost assured me of a carriage to myself – people were a little leery of someone moving around photographing the dots from various angles! STOP PRESS – received Photo of the Day on POTD site 27 Nov 2007 … woohooo it was worth looking a twit on the platform to get the award!!! A large strike in the Arizona desert. / I shot this one with the camera setup vertically since the lightning was too close to get any clouds, it added a whole new challenge to getting a good capture and cost me a couple of good bolts. / I was going to clone out the home on the bottom left but thought it added some scale.
