Canon 40D / EF-S 17-85mm @ 17mm / ISO 100 f/22, 1/5 sec exposure. Ralphs Bay is a shallow, windswept bay, situated on the east of the Derwent Estuary, about 12 kilometers south-east of Hobart in Tasmania, Australia. The bay is enfolded by the low, bare hills of Droughty Point to the northwest and the “spit” of South Arm, beyond Opossum Bay, to the southwest. Walker Corporation had recently proposed the construction of a bayside residential marina and canal development, “Lauderdale Quay”, in the northeastern reaches of the bay, adjacent to the Lauderdale isthmus. This proposal was subject to community consultation and was opposed on environmental, aesthetic and health grounds by a number of parties, including the ‘Save Ralphs Bay’ community group. Major environmental concerns were raised with respect to the development of a conservation area which is environmentally sensitive and has significant estuarine ecological values. Support for the Tasmanian Planning Commission’s draft recommendation against the proposed Ralphs Bay canal estate was expressed in at least 91% of submissions on the Draft Integrated Assessment Report (DIAR). There was no support for the Walker Corp. proposal from any organisation or professional body, and only a handful of brief submissions in favour of the development from community members. This has been a major win for the Tasmanian Community who overwhelmingly saw this as a major environmental threat.
